The cosmopolitan city of Brighton is often dubbed 'London-by-the-sea'. The program at the University of Brighton, voted the 'London Sunday Times' University of the Year' in 1999, offers a varied academic program in teacher education, literature, history, economics, and the sciences. The fall and spring semesters begin with an obligatory short course on Contemporary British Culture and Society taught exclusively for USAC participants. USAC students then choose from the large number of courses taught at the university, for example: Public Policy and Administration, International Accounting, History of Design, Applied Biology, Visual Cultures, History of British Drama'. USAC students at the University of Brighton can participate in the six field trips (i.e. to London, to Paris, to Dublin, and other sites) organized for international students each semester and in many campus sponsored sporting and cultural activities.
Brighton, developed as a holiday resort in the early nineteenth century, is located on the southern coast of England. Today it is a hub of activity year round and its European atmosphere attracts all kinds of people with an enduring affection for the city, its community and its quirks. Brighton is conveniently located only 30 minutes from London's Gatwick airport and 30 minutes from Newhaven, which has ferry crossings to France. Although most tourists never look further than the Palace Pier and the Royal Pavilion, students will find a lively alternative scene. Brighton has many markets and stores and its boutiques, whole food shops, open-air cafes and buskers (street musicians) make it a must-see.
