Description

The Child Diversity & Development program is designed for students majoring in psychology, child development, education, sociology, human development, social work, and related fields. It offers you: Reflective and analytical skills linking theory with practice through observation in Danish childhood and youth institutions and an interdisciplinary approach; Real-life insights into the complex issues of diversity, integration, and education; An understanding of the Danish philosophy and practice of working with children at risk or with special needs. Students enrolled in the Child Diversity & Development program will take the program core courses (a theory plus a practicum course), which are Children in a Multiculturalism Context or Children with Special Needs. Both courses will include a Child Diversity and Development Practicum. The weekly, day long practicum is a required companion to the theory core courses.

Students will be placed in a Danish preschool or after-school program one day a week for a total of 50-60 hours in the semester. You will observe and interact with the children under the guidance of a supervising pedagogue. You will discuss and develop your practicum experiences in class. Students will also participate in two course-integrated study tours. Beyond the core courses and study tours, students are free to select any combination of courses from the DIS curriculum, barring scheduling conflicts.

Highlights

Study tours include a short regional tour in Denmark early in the semester and a longer European study tour to London (Spring) or Edinburgh (Fall) (Multicultural Context) or the Tallinn-Stockholm (Special Needs).

Scholarships are Available

The DIS Board of Directors has allocated scholarship funds to help you afford to study in Denmark. Scholarships consist of grants in the range of USD 1,000 to 5,000 per semester. Summer scholarships range from USD 300 - 1000 depending on your program selection. All scholarships are awarded based on financial need.
