Teach-Abroad Experts Answer Your Questions
Are you into teaching? Do you love traveling? Then maybe teaching abroad is the career path for you. This entails meeting new faces and experiencing a different culture while making a difference. If you are uncertain about whether you're qualified or where you should start, our experts have answered some questions that you might have.
|
What type of people are teaching abroad nowadays?
We're seeing participants of all ages and backgrounds choose to participate these days- the common characteristics seem to be a taste for adventure and a keen interest in experiencing what it is really like to live in another culture, as opposed to just traveling for the sake of travel. - Greenheart Travel
What are the different reasons why your participants have chosen to teach abroad?
Most have done some traveling, and love it, but want to stay and live in another culture as opposed to just visiting briefly as a tourist. Some have not had the chance to travel much, but desire to do so. They realize that teaching English is a great way to allow them to live abroad and support themselves while doing so. Some people are not sure what they want to do career-wise and hope this experience will give them some direction. Many are interested in personal growth and challenging themselves by living outside of their comfort zone. And some view teaching English as a way to help people improve their lives. Given the current economy in the U.S., many people who have had an interest in living abroad are finding this is the ideal time to do so, when jobs are more difficult to find in the U.S., but teaching jobs overseas are still plentiful. - LanguageCorps
Some of the reasons given, usually from those in their 20's, is they don't know what they want to do after graduating from college, or because after taking a semester/quarter worth of classes they do not feel like the school scene is for them. Some have graduated from high school and are not sure what they want to do afterwards. So taking several months or a year of teaching is a good way for them to take a break and reevaluate what they want to do. Teaching abroad might give them some type of direction. Older participants are either retired from teaching and love it so much they want to continue, or are currently in the teaching field but due to the economic conditions have been laid off or expect to be laid off. They still want to continue teaching and they need to have a job, so teaching abroad is a great option for them. - i-to-i Meaningful Travel

What type of person typically does best in a teaching position abroad?
There isn't really a typical type of person who does best in teaching abroad but it does help if you are enthusiastic and outgoing. - i-to-i Meaningful Travel
What kind of salary, benefits, etc. can you get from a job teaching abroad?
Pay and benefits vary greatly by country. In Asia, teachers can expect to do quite well, typically making the equivalent of several hundred USD per month more than it costs to live comfortably. Schools in Asia also tend to provide more benefits, which can include airfare reimbursement, complimentary housing, medical insurance, and/or contract completion bonuses. In Latin America and Europe, teachers should be able to make enough to live comfortably, but it is not as common to make more than that. - LanguageCorps
How does someone get the correct visa or work permit to teach abroad?
Our local partnering schools will either write them a letter or invitation so our participants can apply for the appropriate visas before they arrive, or sometimes they will get the proper work or cultural exchange visa in country. If teachers are there less than 3 months or unpaid, a tourist visa will usually suffice and be less time consuming and costly to organize. - Cultural Embrace
