Guatemalan VistaGuatemala City, Guatemala: Guatemala City is the largest and the most diverse city in all of Central America. It became the nation's capital in 1776 after an earthquake devastated the former capital of Antigua. This is a vibrant city with architecture ranging from modern buildings to Spanish colonial, with sprawling shantytowns. The city has seen increased migration from the countryside over the past 30 years due to natural disasters and the legacy of civil war; accordingly, Guatemala City has become a center for social reform. When not volunteering, visitors enjoy exploring festive markets, Mayan ruins, picturesque lakes, active volcanoes, and rainforests.

Volunteer with Children in Costa Rica Puriscal, Costa Rica: Puriscal is a rural community, located about an hour west of the capital city of San Jose. The town boasts magnificent views and great weather, and is just off one of the main roads leading to the Pacific Ocean. Puriscal is a small town, not known as a tourist attraction, with very little foreign influence. It is considered a town where Costa Rican religious and cultural traditions are strong. There is also access to indigenous sites (a rarity in Costa Rica) where volunteers can learn about their arts, crafts, and culture as well. Because there is little outside influence, volunteer work is very visible, and the local people are excited to create friendly relationships and share their culture with visitors.

Just Listen to the Voices of Our Volunteers

“My overall experience in Guatemala can be described briefly as the most fulfilling, and life changing experience of my entire life. Something that really stood out for me was how caring the staff at the Home-Base was; Virginia and all of the other staff members were incredible. I felt much more immersed in the Guatemalan culture than I thought I would be.”
- Meghan Riley, Volunteer in Guatemala City, Guatemala

“This was one of the greatest experiences of my life. It was the first time I did something completely on my own. Traveling alone to a foreign country, meeting all new people, working with all new people, not speaking the language fluently; all of it was very exciting, scary, but nevertheless, very exciting.”
- Linda Cherrington, Volunteer in Puriscal, Costa Rica
