How to Volunteer Abroad in Taiwan

Prepare to Volunteer Abroad

Set Goals

Before jumping into a volunteer program in Taiwan, take a moment to think about what you hope to get out of it. Whether it’s personal growth, cultural understanding, or building new skills, having a clear sense of purpose can make your experience more impactful.

  • Explore your interests. Not sure what fits you best? Try working with kids, supporting environmental causes, or assisting in community development. Taiwan’s programs are varied, so don’t be afraid to experiment.
  • Decide how deep you want to go. If you're curious but short on time, a few weeks might be enough to get a taste. Want something more immersive? A longer stay can help you form deeper connections and really understand local life.
  • Be open to everyday moments. Some of the most meaningful parts of your experience may not happen during volunteer hours. Sharing a meal, joining a temple celebration, or navigating a local bus route can offer insight into Taiwanese culture that no guidebook can teach.

Understand the benefits

Taiwan makes it easy to settle in and get involved. It’s one of those places where things just work. Transport is reliable, the streets feel safe, and people are genuinely welcoming.

  • Easy to explore. With a solid train and bus system, getting around is straightforward. Whether you're in a city or heading to the mountains, it's all accessible.
  • Everyday connections. Volunteering here often means being part of a small, tight-knit team. That leads to real conversations and shared meals that stick with you.
  • Good value for your budget. Food, housing, and daily costs are reasonable, so you can focus more on the experience and less on your wallet.

Things to know

There are a few details that make volunteering in Taiwan smoother if you know them ahead of time. Nothing complicated, just things that help you settle in quicker.

  • Accommodation - Most volunteers live in shared apartments or homestays. Homestays are great if you're hoping to practice Mandarin and connect with locals. Shared housing offers more independence and a social vibe.
  • Language - You don’t need to be fluent in Mandarin. Learning a few key phrases or keeping a translation app handy makes daily life easier, and locals appreciate the effort.
  • Climate shifts - Taiwan is humid for much of the year. Summer brings typhoons and sudden rain, so pack light, breathable clothes and a good umbrella.

Falling in love with the country and the people

March 03, 2020by: Steven Bowerman - AustraliaProgram: Taiwan Internship with Meiji Internships

This experience was extremely rewarding and motivated me to study more about teaching in order to become a great teacher. I was so happy to spend time with the children, but also with the teachers who taught me so many things. Working with children is not always easy, because they sometimes don't know how to express their feelings, and you have to understand it yourself in order to teach them well and take good care of them. Thanks to the teachers I can now understand them better. As the culture is different, their behavior might be different as well. This internship was a good challenge for me, and I hope the children will remember me because I will go to Taiwan to see them in the future, for sure!
