New Zealand is a must for the adventure addict. In this little corner of the world, also known to many fantasy-lovers as Mordor, is an enticing island. Turn your globe-trotting getaway into a meaningful experience by volunteering in Christchurch. As the third largest city in the country, there are a variety of volunteer opportunities for any individual or group. Not only will you boost your resume, meet the locals, and support a cause you’re excited about, but you will have access to a country that needs no filter on instagram. So leave that selfie-stick at home and pack your bags — it’s time to volunteer in Christchurch!

Ways to Volunteer in Christchurch

Christchurch was devastated by the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011. It jolted the city and left a scar that is still in the healing process. Reconstruction of the city has impacted the economy and the recovery has been positive. From devastation to optimism, the process of rebuilding Christchurch has an end goal of making the city safer. Not only will your volunteer project help out a cause in which you believe in, but visiting this city and choosing to spend your money here will directly boost their economy. Now that sounds like a win-win. Put your passions to good use and serve in a city that will warmly welcome you.

Popular causes and program types in Christchurch. A variety of volunteer opportunities are offered in and around Christchurch. Join a group of like-minded people who care about nature conservancy, work on farm, learn about the tourism industry, or work in youth development. Whether your specialty is kickin’ it with the Kiwis, herding sheep, or going green, we’ve got you covered.

Short term volunteer projects in Christchurch. A short term project is ideal for those who have a quick holiday from their 9-5 job back home or a summer break between the school year. Turn that vacation into a time to give back to a community while developing new skills. A tourist visa (stamp upon arrival) allows you to stay in the country for up to three months. Short term projects are excellent for those who want to have a purpose in their travels, yet can’t commit to dropping everything to join the expat life.

Long term volunteer projects in Christchurch. If time allows, a long term project will give you the opportunity to not only connect with the community that you are working with, but to become a part of it. You will be able to dedicate more time to your project. Project aside, you will have more time to explore. Hop in a van for a weekend road trip or take a ferry to the northern island. Make sure to check if you are eligible for a visitor visa which allows you to extend your trip.

Life in Christchurch for Volunteers

There is plenty to keep you occupied while wanderlusting about this European-esque city. Stuff your face with pavlova, bike until your legs fall off, or picnic in Hagley Park. Get to know the history of the Canterbury region and the Maori natives as well. What other place to enjoy the Haka than New Zealand?

As the gateway to the south island, you will be overwhelmed with the opportunities at your fingertips. This city will give you access to wonders that you don’t yet know exist. Wipe the sweat from your brow after a week of volunteering and get out of town. Enjoy skiing, camping, hiking, and rafting. Renting a car with some fellow nomads and volunteers is an inexpensive way to get out of town for a day trip or the weekend. Take a trip to Queenstown and Milford Sounds. Trek up the Franz Josef Glacier on New Zealand’s highest peak, Mt. Cook (12,316 feet). Be it beaches, mountains, city, or seclusion, Christchurch has them all.

GoAbroad Insider Tips

WWOOF-ing is a great and budget-minded way to volunteer on a farm – no prior experience required. For a small fee you can create an account and browse through volunteer opportunities in Christchurch. You then connect with a “host family.” In exchange for room and board you work on their farm 20-30 hours a week.

It’s a good idea to have a bit of cushion in your travel wallet; sadly, New Zealand is not the cheapest place to visit. However, hostels can be found for as little as $25 per night, van camping is legit, and erase the word “fine” from “fine dining” to get the best for your buck.

Have you ever gone snow-skiing in July or sailing in December? Visiting New Zealand is your chance to swap up the seasons.

Volunteering abroad in Christchurch will give you a chance to truly give back to a cause you care about. Not only that, but a huge benefit to volunteering is that you will learn a lot about yourself. Resist temptation to kick back and laze on the beach or hide in the mountains (at least for the all of your stay). Do some good, mate — volunteer in Christchurch!
