Most volunteer organizations in Latvia will have placements located in or near the capital city of Riga. However, volunteer opportunities in other areas may exist. Regardless, Latvia’s compact size allows for easy access from your volunteer home base to other parts of the country and the rest of Europe through the extensive bus and train system.

Hailed the European Capital of Culture in 2014, vibrant and cosmopolitan Riga is home to a third of Latvia’s population and is the largest city in the Baltic. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, Riga is recognized as having the best examples of Art Nouveau architecture in the world. A lively nightlife revolves around a pop music and club scene. Popular excursions from the capital include visiting the glorious unspoiled beaches of the Baltic coastline, located as little as 20 minutes from the cobbled streets of Old Riga.
