How to Volunteer Abroad in Geology
Overview
Prepare for Volunteering
Understand the benefits
Geology volunteer programs offer a rare chance to connect your curiosity with real-world exploration and discovery.
- Practical skills. Get comfortable using field tools, taking measurements, and collecting samples. Things you’ll actually use in future courses or jobs.
- Career direction. Not sure what kind of geology you're into? This is a low-risk way to figure that out while building relevant experience.
- Professional exposure. You’ll be working alongside scientists and field teams, not just observing. It’s a great way to learn the ropes and make connections.
Things to know
Before you head into the field, here are a few essentials to help you prepare and know what to expect:
- Fieldwork - Conditions won’t always be comfortable. Expect long days outside, unpredictable weather, and limited access to Wi-Fi or city conveniences.
- Gear - You’ll likely need sturdy boots, durable clothes, a daypack, and weather-specific gear. Some programs provide equipment, but always check ahead.
- Expectations - These are working trips, not vacations. You’ll be helping with real research, which might include repetitive tasks, early mornings, or getting a little muddy.
Locations
Choose a Location
Geology volunteer programs are available in various locations worldwide, each offering unique landscapes and valuable opportunities. Here are some destinations where you can make a difference while pursuing your passion for geology:
South Africa
South Africa's rich geological diversity includes some of the world's oldest rocks and significant mineral deposits. Volunteers can participate in conservation projects that protect geological sites and contribute to wildlife research in areas where geology and biodiversity intersect.
Costa Rica
Costa Rica's active tectonic setting offers a vibrant environment for studying volcanology and seismic activity. Volunteers can engage in conservation projects that focus on preserving natural habitats influenced by geological processes, providing a holistic understanding of geology's role in ecosystem dynamics.
Peru
Home to the Andes Mountains and ancient geological formations, Peru offers opportunities to study mineral deposits, rock formations, and erosion patterns. Volunteers may work on conservation projects, archaeological site preservation, or geological mapping in this diverse terrain.

- 1-4 weeks: Ideal for those wanting a quick introduction to geology through brief, engaging volunteer work.
- 3-6 months: Great for those seeking hands-on experience through a mix of fieldwork and studies.
- 6-12 months: Ideal for dedicated volunteers eager to explore geological causes, as well as gap-year students aiming to make a significant impact.
- 12+ months: Best for dedicated conservationists seeking career experience and long-term impact.
4. Funding & scholarships
Look for funding opportunities, scholarships, and deals that suit your needs. These can help make your goals more achievable.
5. Apply

My Experience Working on a Strawberry Farm in Egypt I worked on a strawberry farm in Egypt for a period of time. My main duties included picking strawberries, sorting them, and preparing them for packing. The work started early in the morning and required physical effort, but I enjoyed working outdoors. This experience taught me the importance of teamwork, responsibility, and hard work. I also learned how strawberries are grown and harvested. Working on the farm helped me develop patience and discipline. Overall, it was a valuable experience that improved my work skills and gave me a better understanding of agricultural work.
A wonderful and transformative experience in the Canadian Wilderness!
June 13, 2026by: Paul Braconnier - FranceProgram: Conservation Volunteering in Canada
I spent two months volunteering at Chilcotin Holidays, and it was hands down one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. As a French university student, I came here looking to improve my English, step out of my comfort zone, and discover the real Canadian wilderness. I got exactly what I came for, and so much more! The environment is beautifully remote, and the reality of the ranch is wonderfully authentic. Whether it's caring for the horses in the early morning, setting up the wilderness camps, or interacting with guests from all over the world, every day is an adventure. It is physical, demanding, and incredibly fulfilling. If you are looking for a standard, comfortable luxury vacation, this isn't it. But if you want a genuine, rugged adventure where you will push your limits, build deep connections, and experience the pure Canadian frontier, I 100% recommend Chilcotin Holidays. Thank you to the whole team for this unforgettable journey!"
More than I expected from a volunteer programme
June 12, 2026by: Eleanor Lawrence - United KingdomProgram: Conservation Volunteering in Canada
I spent 10 weeks at the Chilcotin Ark Institute and came away with far more than I expected when I first applied. I originally joined because I was interested in conservation and wanted to spend time in the Canadian wilderness, but the experience ended up being much broader than that. The programme combines conservation work, ranch life, community living, and a surprising amount of personal responsibility. Rather than being given a fixed schedule every day, you're encouraged to take ownership of your goals and find ways to contribute. That approach won't suit everyone, but for me it was one of the most valuable parts of the experience. One of the highlights was progressing to the point where I could assist with guiding. It was rewarding to go from learning the basics of ranch life and horse work to helping support guests and take on more responsibility. The horseback element was also a major draw. Some of my favourite memories were spent travelling through the backcountry and seeing parts of British Columbia that very few people ever get to experience. Life at the ranch is immersive. You're not just helping with conservation projects; you're also part of a small community. Everyone contributes to cooking, maintenance, animal care, and the day-to-day running of the ranch. The days are full, but that is also what makes the experience feel meaningful. The programme isn't a holiday, and it isn't a typical volunteer placement. It requires initiative, adaptability, and a willingness to get involved. However, if you're looking for a chance to challenge yourself, learn practical skills, spend time in nature, and contribute to something larger than yourself, I would highly recommend it. For the right person, it's a genuinely unique experience and one that I expect will stay with me for a long time.

I'm extremely satisfied
December 16, 2025by: Jeniffer RamirezI'm extremely satisfied to have been part of this great program helping children, their future and the future of the country. Accommodation - I was very happy and comfortable in a clean and pleasant environment. Food was always delicious, transport was always good, and cleaning was perfect. Staff were very kind and friendly with very good support; I was always able to reach them. I enjoyed every experience. Thank you so much for everything.
I enjoyed being part of the teaching program very muc
December 04, 2025by: Jennifer DuncanI enjoyed being part of the teaching program very much. Teaching English to year 3&4 was challenging at times but also a lot of fun. Receiving an email 2 weeks before arriving regarding school, classes would have been good. Emphasising the need for a laptop for lesson planning would have helped. I was very satisfied with accommodation; beds and pillows were comfortable, though upgrading to aircon was needed. Having 2 people in hot climate was better than three. Food was excellent and fresh with a great selection of meals all prepared by lovely, helpful staff. Having the occasional chicken meal was welcomed. Enjoyed experiencing Kerala food. We didn't need transport and the room was cleaned once a week & bathroom a few times each week. No complaints. All the staff were incredibly helpful, answering many questions. Working with Reshma was great both in and out of the classroom. She was extermely supportive when doing lesson planning & her help in the classroom with translation & classroom management was fantastic. Staff knew where various yoga places were always willing to suggest places to visit. Great suggestion by Shamla for cooking lesson and Kathkali.
Save the turtles
November 22, 2025by: Nathan Gilmore - United StatesThe project and orientations went smoothly and met my expectations. The only feedback I have would be that there's a lot of initial confusion when first arriving in San Jose, as to where you'll be volunteering and how you'll be traveling to and from there. It all worked out in the end but having tickets ahead of time instead of making us buy them and figure out taxis would have been much easier. The project itself was a great experience and I met a lot of new great fun people.
It was a experience like any other
September 26, 2025by: Isaiah Kurth - CanadaIt was so cool to meet new people, experience a different culture and feel like I actually made a difference. It was such a fun time, I would definitely do it again. I never thought I would eat so many beans and rice!
Life changing experience
September 20, 2025by: Ashley Ajayi - United StatesBy far the most amazing experience! Traveling by myself was a little nerve racking at first but that was quickly changed once I realized how much fun I was going to have. Maximo made sure all my accommodations were met and I was safe.

Turtle conservation
August 16, 2025by: Katie Cooper - United KingdomI did 2 weeks here for turtle conservation and I thoroughly enjoyed my time! I made great friends, and had great food, and stayed in Ostional with the nicest, quietest black sand beach! The volunteer work was fun, and I mostly enjoyed the beach clean up, ut was very theraputic, and filled me with self-confidence of doing a good thing. I have also seen the impact plastic has on the world, and i will now try my best to recycle and reduce waste more! The volunteering has definitely impacted me for life.
So cool.
July 12, 2025by: Alyson Jackson - United StatesI was able to see so many sea turtles and an arribada happened while I was there. At first I had some trouble adjusting but got moved to the station where accommodations were very nice. Moving to the station hade my experience so much better.
Fun time in Costa Rica
February 21, 2025by: Emily Wilson - United StatesIt was a great program. It encouraged us to really experience local culture and life. Learning to navigate the bus system during Costa Rican rush hour was an unexpected, but super fun, part of the week. We really are given the opportunity to venture outside the regular tourist experience and see daily activities. Gave me a new appreciation for our similarities and differences.

Great experience!
December 14, 2024by: Vasilena Barakova - BulgariaI thoroughly enjoyed volunteering with the turtle conservation program! It was a rewarding experience to contribute to protecting these amazing creatures while learning so much about conservation. Would love to do it again!
Turtle Conservation - a great trip
December 14, 2024by: Caitlin Brayne - United KingdomI had a fantastic trip from start to finish with the lovely people at SOS Grande. Everyone was so lovely and inviting and I really felt as if we made a difference within the community. The daily activities and amenities were great and I would recommend this trip to anyone!!
Incredible experience I will never forget!
November 30, 2024by: Emily Newton - United KingdomThe sea turtle conservation project was amazing. I felt so humbled to be a part of the project they are doing to save the turtles. I would highly recommend doing it. If you're lucky you may get to see and arribada or baby turtles.
