A Guide to Business Volunteering Abroad
Why Volunteer in Business Abroad
There is a lot to see and do in this big, beautiful world, but sometimes those drab cubicle walls can seem a bit like a trap. It is easy to feel like a break from the traditional 9-to-5 will lead to a serious case of FOMO (fear of missing out!) on valuable time in your career. However, there are many meaningful travel opportunities that will not leave a gaping hole in your resume! For students and recent graduates, a professional volunteer placement is the perfect liaison between the “real world” and seeing the world.
When it comes to business volunteering abroad, you can choose from many different areas of business. Especially if you are still trying to find your niche (aren’t we all?!), business volunteering can be a great way to get a “trial run” in different roles without long term commitment. Business volunteers can gain valuable international work experience that will jazz up their resume, and inspire new ways of thinking and problem solving.
Speaking of your career, volunteer experience is already a highly coveted section on resumes (employers eat it up!), because it shows that you are an altruistic person with initiative. With a business-related volunteering - ding, ding, ding! - that is the sound of a winning combination on your resume.
Business today is all about globalization and intercultural communication. By volunteering in business abroad, you’ll be proving to employers that you have both the business skills and cultural awareness to be successful in today’s workplace. Not to mention, business volunteering will also help you build an international network that could help you land your future dream job.
Locations
There is no shortage of volunteer organizations around the world, which can make it challenging to narrow down your choices and choose the best place and placement for you. Consider these questions when trying to decide the best way for you to volunteer abroad in business: is there a certain cause that you are passionate about? Is there an area of the world that is high on your travel bucket list? Is networking with international business gurus a top priority? If you still aren’t sure, here are a couple of the top countries to become a business volunteer abroad to get you started, too!
South Africa. As a business volunteer in South Africa, the work you do will directly impact the community that you are serving. Many business volunteer programs in South Africa involve helping South Africans with everything from business development to conservation activities. Business volunteers in South Africa will work closely with locals, helping to develop their small businesses, teaching entrepreneurship and best business practices, so they will be able to support themselves long-term. The modern day “teach a man to fish” is “teach a man business skills!”. Cape Town is home to many business volunteer placements like this, and is also a great setting for your next adventure abroad. Cape Town offers all the benefits of a developed city, along with natural landscape and beaches surrounding it. After a hard-day’s work you can hike up to Table Mountain (don’t worry, there is a cable car too!) for a beautiful view overlooking Camps Bay.
England. Not only is London known for being a hub for international business, but it is also home to many NGOs. This mixture will give business volunteers exposure to the more traditional corporate business networks, while volunteering with great organizations hoping to make a difference in the world. If you are interested in nonprofit management, England is a great place to truly learn the ins and outs of an international organization. England’s proximity to many other European countries allows for easy and accessible European travel options during your free time (Eurotrip, anyone?).
China. If learning from a culture that is a vital part of global business interests you, then business volunteering in China should definitely be on your list of top destinations. The immersive experience you’ll get as a business volunteer in China will give you the valuable opportunity (for you and your resume!) to boost your cultural awareness and improve communication skills. Many organizations in China will place you in community development, sharing your business skills and coaching locals. Business volunteers in China can usually choose to live either in a rural area or an urban metropolis, like Beijing. Experiences as a business volunteer in China will lead to many marketable bullet points on your resume, along with the chance to explore Asia, and maybe even see a panda or two.
Business Volunteer Programs
The best part about business volunteering abroad is that there is a little something for everyone. There are a range of business volunteer opportunities that allow you to choose from strictly business to more cause-centric placements. As you are choosing the best business volunteer program for you, you’ll want to consider your personal priorities and goals for the experience.
The most popular way to volunteer abroad in business is for charity or nonprofit organizations in microfinance or business development. Each business volunteer program provides a unique business experience that encourages you to improve everything from interpersonal communication skills to project management.
The length of business volunteering abroad is completely flexible, depending on the amount of time you want to spend abroad. Placements can be anywhere from one to two weeks to one to two years. Any length of time volunteering abroad will be a valuable experience, but to truly immerse yourself in the host culture, it is recommended that you participate in a program that is two to four weeks or longer.
Requirements vary between programs, but generally there is a minimum age requirement of 18 years old. Most business volunteer programs provide training, and therefore, do not require previous experience; however, some will ask that you are either currently pursuing or have already graduated with a business-related degree.
Benefits & Challenges
Resume Booster & Beyond. One of the most tangible things you can gain from professional volunteer work abroad are the extra bullet points on your resume. These hard skills will be complemented by experience with cultural communication, teamwork, and problem solving. The knowledge you gain while volunteering in business in an international setting will be extremely marketable for jobs in any field. Business volunteering also opens you up to a network of people that can help you with future opportunities.
Soul Searching. Business volunteering abroad goes far beyond professional development. It will teach you more about yourself and your personal interests, and it is a great way to explore what you are passionate about and find a niche that is important to you. Becoming a business volunteer will also give you some pretty nice pictures to hang on that cubicle wall someday!
The Hard Part. There are some challenges that come with business volunteer work abroad (like, how to pick a country when you can go almost anywhere?!). Seriously though, business volunteering abroad will take a lot of energy and dedication. You may not have a lot of experience in the particular business field you choose, so there may be a lot of formal and informal training along the way. All of the hard work will be worth it as you reflect on an amazing cultural experience and the impact you had on the local community.
Contrary to popular belief, you can have it all. Getting out and seeing the world does not mean you have to completely abandon your career. When you volunteer abroad in business, you have the chance to explore, learn, and gain marketable skills all at the same time.

August 19, 2026by: Jimena Amaro Cordova - United StatesProgram: Global Internship & Volunteer Programs with Connect-123!
My internship at the Salesian Institute Youth Projects pushed me far beyond what I expected, taking me from supporting program logistics to independently running counseling sessions and managing my own client caseload within just a few months. I was trusted with real responsibility early on, from leading a group of 45 adult learners on my own to adapting a therapeutic intervention on short notice for an urgent client referral, and that trust taught me more about clinical work and resilience than I could have learned in a classroom. This experience confirmed that clinical psychology, particularly cross-cultural and community-based care, is exactly the path I want to pursue.

I couldn’t have asked for a better internship experience. AMAZING
August 13, 2026by: Daniel Abdulla - United KingdomProgram: Worlds #1 Volunteer Programs. 40+ Countries from $20/day!
I was, probably like some of you, a bit sceptical when initially applying due to the low price compared to other organisations. However, the experience I had was absolutely amazing and I have learnt so much about not only myself, but about different cultures and etiquettes. My program manager, Marissa, was absolutely fantastic at answer all of my questions and adjusting any mistakes I submitted onto my application such as flight number and pick-up time. Despite the huge time difference between Marissa and myself, she was able to reply to my email promptly and with extreme care - I was really at ease throughout the whole process and that made the experience a bunch better. Everything on my volunteering was as described on the program guide and there were no surprises when I landed, everything that happened during my week I was prepared for. I would really recommend this company and I want to thank them once more for the fantastic and truly life-changing experience they provided for me.

August 12, 2026by: Nicole Boduch - AustriaProgram: Worlds #1 Volunteer Programs. 40+ Countries from $20/day!
I had such a wonderful experience in Split! I met so many amazing people from different countries and made memories that I will definitely never forget. The Youth Support program gave me the opportunity to connect with the local community, experience a different culture and grow personally at the same time. The local team was very welcoming and supportive and I always felt comfortable asking questions or getting help when needed. I especially loved the international atmosphere and meeting people with completely different backgrounds and stories.besides volunteering, I had enough time to explore Split, enjoy the beautiful beaches and nature and experience Croatian culture. This experience helped me step outside my comfort zone, become more independent and see things from new perspectives. I’m really grateful for all the people I met and everything I experienced during my time here. I would definitely recommend this program to anyone who wants to travel, volunteer, meet new people and create unforgettable memories abroad. ❤️

Preparation before trip
July 30, 2026by: Yuange LiuProgram: Worlds #1 Volunteer Programs. 40+ Countries from $20/day!
The preparation before trip was so detailed that I don’t have anything to worry about. It got everything listed and made it so much easier to tick off what I’ve done and what they need. The communication with the manager for the volunteer was so smooth and fast, and I was able to get a reply current evening or next morning (due to different timing in different countries). I wanted to change my volunteer from rural teaching to turtle reservation, it was so fast that there wasn’t any problems with the money nor arrangements, everything just went so smoothly, really impressed. The local team there really helped a lot, the driver, the leader, everyone was just so nice, even the cook and the receptionist. This volunteer as itself also helped me a lot on raising awareness for the sea turtles, learnt a lot and really hope to help them consistently. This is such a memorable trip and I hope to do these volunteers with IVHQ next summer with my friends.
Rewarding and fun experience
July 27, 2026by: Frederika Bosman - NetherlandsProgram: Women's Empowerment Project in Tanzania, Kilimanjaro Region
As I have my own business, I thought that GHTA might be an option for me to do some volunteer work, so I did a short stay with them with the idea to go back if the program suits me and the answer is a resounding yes. The program is excellent and the students are all highly motivated, enthusiastic and fun. I left wondering whether it was not me that learned more from them than the other way around. The staff are all friendly and extremely helpful. The living accomodation is excellent.I am planning to go back in November and again in 2027. I am happy to recommend this programme to anyone who is looking for a rewarding and interesting program with goals that work.

This experience has been nothing short of incredible. I will forever be grateful for this opportunity. My internship could not have been a more perfect match. I have gained not only new skills but also a new perspective as well. Outside of the internship, exploring this beautiful city has been so fun. Carla, the program coordinator, is one of the most amazing people I have ever had the privilege of meeting. She planned the most fun activities for our group and was truly invested in our well-being!

Following this program was a unique experience that I will never forget. I thought it gave a great balance of working at my internship, meeting new people, and exploring the new country. More Than a Trip: A Life-Changing Experience in Jamaica
June 23, 2026by: Steph Cink - United StatesProgram: Worlds #1 Volunteer Programs. 40+ Countries from $20/day!
My Jamaica experience was great because it allowed me to step outside of my comfort zone, connect with new people, and make meaningful memories while serving others. I loved being able to learn about the culture, build relationships with the local community, and see the impact that small acts of kindness can have. The experience challenged me to grow in my faith, gratitude, and appreciation for the opportunities I have. It was rewarding to work alongside others who shared the same passion for helping people and creating a positive difference. IVHQ does a great job of creating opportunities for volunteers to make a meaningful impact while also providing support and guidance throughout the experience. They help connect volunteers with local communities, organize programs, and make it possible for people to serve in a way that is safe and structured. I appreciated how they allowed us to experience the culture of Jamaica while still focusing on helping the community. Their organization made the trip feel purposeful and helped create an environment where volunteers could learn, serve, and grow.

This being my first time, I enjoyed it more than I expected to!
June 23, 2026by: Emilyn Yah - SingaporeProgram: Volunteer in Vietnam: Support communities in Ho Chi Minh
I decided to do this as part of my sabbatical from work. I had neither travelled solo nor done volunteering overseas before but this experience taught me that it is something that I am capable of doing. The experience that I had working with the locals was invaluable and gave me great insight into their lives. The children that I worked with were also very enjoyable and brought me much laughter. Administratively, the IVHQ staff that I dealt with were a great support; they were very detailed and responsive to my queries during the enquiry and preparation stages. Instructions were clear and they had a good system going. This is certainly something that I would consider doing again (if I can get time away from work).

Projects Abroad is an exceptional program!! I would recommend volunteering at any of the locations to get an insight into the conservation. I learned so much about the culture of the people, how living among the sea lions, iguanas & any other creature is respected, & how family is so important. I can't say enough about this program!!!! At the age of 78 I couldn't have asked for a more enriching experience !!! You're never too old to learn something new!!

I volunteered in a town ship with grade three and loved every minute of it! The kids are so kind and you can tell they truly love the help you have to offer. This experience will forever have such a big impact on me and changed me as a person. I would definitely recommend this to anyone:)

I have already done 3 programs with IVHQ, and this is just the beginning! Costa Rica to teach English, Fiji for childcare, and Thailand to teach. Each program has been magical! The experience is supported, from the application process through post program reflection, and everything in between. Safety, support, encouragement, insight, and perspective are all the things IVHQ provides and more! You get to meet people from around the world, and then come together for a common purpose. Already planning my next adventure, and I can't wait!
