A Guide to TEFL Courses in Cape Town
What Else You Need to Know
While English is the predominant language spoken in education and business throughout the city, some 70% of Cape Town’s residents are second language speakers (Afrikaans and Xhosa being the two other most prominent languages). This creates an rewarding dynamic for aspiring ESL teachers to train within, living in a place where they can speak English regularly and also gain practice communicating with second-language speakers.
Course structure/format. You can find online, in-class and combo courses in Cape Town. Which means that whatever you need, they’ve got!
Length of courses/requirements. TEFL courses in Cape Town will require at least 120 hours of training in order to complete your certification, which usually translates to a one-month duration abroad. During training you will cover all the basics of teaching English as a second language such as grammar, reading, writing, and speech, and will also cover more advanced topics such as teaching methodology, classroom management, lesson planning, and student assessment.
Job placement assistance. There is a considerable market in Cape Town itself for ESL teachers because of the large second-language population; however you should be prepared with the knowledge that many of these positions are on a volunteer basis, as is the case throughout much of the African continent.
