A Guide to TEFL Courses in New Zealand
Locations
The entire country of New Zealand is just as gorgeous as the panoramic views you see when you take your eyes off Legolas to the backdrops of Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit (where these movies were filmed!). No matter if you choose to earn your TEFL certificate in New Zealand on the North or the South Island, beautiful beaches and great hiking trails will not be out of reach.
“The City of Sails” - Auckland offers all of the benefits of big city living with nearby access to beaches and nature-galore. It is nestled between two harbors on the North Island land and boasts mild weather all year round. While it has the largest population in New Zealand, it maintains a small-town feel, thanks to charming neighborhoods tucked away in its corners. Whether you are into the spirited nightlife, small cafes, and live-music, or lovely little markets, all of the above can be found in Auckland.
“Windy Welly” - Wellington has a population of 200,000 and has affectionately been called "the coolest little capital." This active city is surrounded by 225 miles of walking paths and bike trails, so despite the smaller size, you’ll never be far from a nice stroll. Wellington is a culinary hotspot too, with over 750 restaurants and cafes. The most popular neighborhood among TEFL students is Mount Victoria, just a 10 minute walk from the city center.
“The Garden City” - Christchurch is the largest city on the South Island with a population of 330,000 people. The vibe in this city is a little more laidback, and they are proud of it. There is no better place to relax than in the beautiful Victorian England-style parks and gardens that you will find throughout the city. While Christchurch is known for a more relaxed vibe, it also plays host to many lively festivals throughout the year (like the “Festival of Romance” and the “World Buskers Festival”), so you can always find inspiration for your next ESL lesson!
“The Adventure Capital of the World” - Queenstown is surrounded by mountains and settled next to a lake, making it a haven for anyone that loves adventure sports. From skiing to paragliding, you can find it all in Queenstown. For the more adventurous souls, the city is also home to the 500 foot Nevis bungy jump, which is the highest in the world! The town itself is small and walkable, but with tourists from all over the world flooding in year round, you will definitely meet many interesting people (both inside and outside your school grounds) while taking TEFL courses in Queenstown.
TEFL Courses in New Zealand
If you want to travel the world, but haven’t won the lottery yet, you could probably use some extra money to fund your travels. A TEFL/TESOL certificate can be the answer to your financial impediment. TEFL programs abroad are the perfect way to go almost anywhere, interact with different cultures, and get paid to do it, and TEFL programs in New Zealand are no exception!
Time Commitment. Most TEFL programs in New Zealand last 120 or more hours. TEFL classes are usually flexible, depending on your needs, and there are online courses, in-person courses, or a combination of both available throughout New Zealand. It is possible to take TEFL courses in New Zealand part-time or full-time, so it can take as long as three months or as little as one month to get TEFL certified.
Course Content. Whether you have teaching experience or not, TEFL courses in New Zealand will include a variety of topics to prepare you for teaching English abroad. TEFL courses will help you learn the basics of teaching, like how to teach grammar and phonetics, as well as how to plan your lessons. TEFL programs will also help you improve your presenting skills, practice being more clear and direct with your language, and learn how to teach students at different language levels and abilities. Some TEFL courses in New Zealand will even include practice teaching hours, which is a safe way to get experience before you start applying for ESL jobs abroad!
Post-Certification Benefits. Many TEFL programs in New Zealand offer participants job assistance upon completion of the coursework. In fact, some international TEFL training companies provide life-time job assistance anywhere in the world if you want to teach English abroad somewhere beyond New Zealand in the future.
One thing to keep in mind is that many English teaching jobs in New Zealand are available in summer camps, where international students come to practice English with native speakers. The prime hiring season for these types of jobs is between November and December (New Zealand’s summer starts in December), so while your friends in the northern hemisphere are shoveling snow, you could be lounging on the beach!
Costs & Affordability
As you start to look into TEFL courses in New Zealand, it is a good idea to figure out what is important to you. Making a list of priorities will help you sort through TEFL program opportunities and find the best option for you. Do you want job assistance? Do you want to teach kids? Do you want hands-on experience? These are all things that are worth thinking about as you read the course descriptions and weigh the associated costs of earning TEFL certification in New Zealand.
TEFL courses in New Zealand will vary in cost depending on what is on your “must-have” list. Prices can fall anywhere between $300 and $2,000 for 120 hours of accredited TEFL coursework. Most TEFL program costs will include learning materials and some teaching supplies, like lesson plans and textbooks. For an additional fee, some TEFL programs in New Zealand will offer extra perks, like housing or visa assistance.
The good news is, once you find a teaching job in New Zealand, the pay is relatively good. New Zealanders appreciate their teachers and pay accordingly for full time teaching positions. An ESL teacher could make about $3,000 a month working for a public school in New Zealand, with even more job opportunities if you have some previous teaching experience. For private English language lessons, teachers can make about $20 an hour.
The cost of living in New Zealand is known to be relatively cheap, compared to most big American, Australian, and European cities. General necessities are more affordable in most places; however, food and eating out is notoriously more pricey. To help with that, try to eat items that are in season or readily available (lamb chops, anyone?).
Accommodation & Visas
Housing is not usually included as part of TEFL certification programs in New Zealand, but sometimes language schools will help arrange a flatshare or dorm style living at an extra cost for TEFL students. Even if your TEFL program provider does not provide housing, they will often have recommendations, so it is always good to check with them first! They may also be able to connect you to your TEFL classmates so you can make living arrangements together.
New Zealand offers short-term visas for people between the ages of 18 and 30 from most nations, which are usually available for a 12-month time period and fairly easy to get. To apply, TEFL students just need to submit a form on the New Zealand Immigration website. The basic requirements are that you are within the age range and agree to having health insurance during your stay. You will receive an email from the government a week of applying; it is quick and painless! Another benefit of this visa is that it allows you to work in many different short-term positions while earning TEFL certification in New Zealand, which is great for a little extra money on the side. Check out GoAbroad’s Kiwi Embassy Directory to learn more about visas.
Benefits & Challenges
A major plus of getting your TEFL certificate in New Zealand is that you can become fully immersed in a new culture, but still have the comfort of living in an English-speaking country. Being able to speak the local language will make a good amount of logistical stuff (like visa applications, apartment hunting, and job searches!) a whole lot easier.
There are great opportunities to work as an English teacher in New Zealand, but it is a little more challenging to find a long-term job. While it may be a great location for earning your TEFL certification abroad, you might plan to take your newly-certified-self to a country that doesn’t speak English natively to find an English teaching job. However, if you’re dead-set on a sweet-as life down under, use research, hard work, and the Kiwi “can-do” attitude to find an ESL job in New Zealand.
The beautiful country of New Zealand has many quality TEFL programs that will give you a great start as an ESL teacher. So this is your chance: find a TEFL certification program and book that one-way ticket to Middle Earth!

Loved the experience!

The teaching practicum with Michelle Benson was great. The material was succinct and loaded with various ways to teach English as someone who is not new to teaching, but new to teaching a language. Michelle made the experience fun as well as informative. I also appreciate her encouraging words since I was actually quite nervous at the start.
It was such a fun and engaging time!

Excellent, friendly and informative session by the tutor Michelle Benson. From the very start to the end, the class was very fun to be and she made us believe we can do it. Thanks for being an excellent tutor, Michelle.
Great first experience
July 01, 2026by: Noemi Sarkozi - HungaryProgram: Teach Confidently with this 10-Hour Practicum Course
Great experience completing the 10-hour Virtual TEFL course. The tutor, Michelle Benson, absolutely made the course. She has such positive energy, is incredibly encouraging, and explains everything very clearly. The lessons are well structured and especially helpful for people who have never taught before. One thing worth noting is that the "10-hour" course actually consists of 7 hours of live teaching (2 × 3.5-hour sessions). The remaining 3 hours are allocated to preparing and completing the homework. My advice would be to leave at least a day's gap between the sessions if possible. For people who work full-time, it can be quite difficult to find enough time to prepare properly for the following day's lesson.
Simplified Teaching methods.

It was a fantastic experience. Michelle Benson made teaching methodologies become real life practical experience, making the classroom a relaxed and fun filled experience for both teachers and learners. I am glad I took the chance.
Totally worth it!
June 26, 2026by: Kliment Mihaylov - BulgariaProgram: Teach Confidently with this 10-Hour Practicum Course
I had a lovely experience with my tutor Michelle Benson! The structure of the course is clear; it's great for anyone who wants a more hands-on TEFL experience. I got to apply some of the methods I've been learning in the 180-hour TEFL course in a real classroom setting. Ms. Benson was an absolute delight: she was very joyful, encouraging, and knowledgeable. I especially liked the tense identification method she taught us. I would advise all TEFL learners to take this course so as to get an opportunity to apply the theories learned in the 120/180/300-hour course!
A great time with Michelle Benson

The 10-hour practical course was awesome! Not a single minute of the entire course was boring. Michelle was patient and meticulous, explaining in detail what it takes to plan and deliver an engaging and interactive lesson. Her feedback was great. She praised every strength and highlighted areas for improvement. Now I am glad I can confidently teach English.

I did the 10 hour course over a weekend with Michelle Benson. She was excellent in her enthusiasm and at providing practical advice on how to prepare for the teacher world. I would definitely recommend the course and it was nice to meet other teaching students online also.

Michelle created such an easy, relaxed atmosphere and guided us as we worked in pairs to put together our own lesson plan. It was also lovely meeting so many great people over Zoom, and I’d absolutely recommend it to anyone considering a TEFL career. Michelle is a fantastic teacher and you will really have a great time on this course.
A Fantastic Learning Experience
May 19, 2026by: Aoife ReillyI did the 10 hour virtual TEFL course with Michelle Benson. It ran over two days and was really intense and interactive, and I honestly loved it. At first I was unsure how it would work through Skype, but it ended up going way beyond what I expected. I came away with new friends, a better understanding of the English language than I thought I had, plus loads of practical tips and pointers I can bring into my own classroom. I cannot recommend Michelle enough, you will not be bored for even a moment. I would absolutely do it again. Thanks for everything Michelle! :) Lisa

feeling more confident and ready for teaching online
May 06, 2026by: Ben PowerProgram: Teach Confidently with this 10-Hour Practicum Course
I have just finished the 180 hour Level 5 course. I found the material really good and it was straightforward enough to work through. The weekly Zoom meetings were really useful whenever I was stuck and needed extra support with a few of the topics. Whether you are coming from a teaching background or have never taught English before, I would definitely recommend doing one of the TEFL Ireland courses. My next step is starting the 30 hour teaching online course so I feel more confident and ready for teaching online.
This was a great learning choice
May 05, 2026by: Cian FitzgeraldProgram: World Class - Government-Regulated Level 5 TEFL Diploma
I completed the TEFL Institute 30-hour Teaching IELTS Preparation course and I would wholeheartedly recommend it. Everything in the online module is straightforward to work through, and it covers far more than the essentials for teaching an IELTS Preparation class, since it also offers plenty of useful links and suggestions for extra reading if you want to build on what you learn. The fact that it is online was a real plus for me, because I could plan my own timetable and move through the material at whatever speed suited me.
Feeling Prepared to Teach Abroad in Europe
May 04, 2026by: Molly MurphyProgram: World Class - Government-Regulated Level 5 TEFL Diploma
I am updating this review now that I have completed the course. It is a really solid program with loads of content and helpful resources. I have not started teaching yet, but everything included in the 180 hour course has left me feeling properly prepared, from the activities and games to guidance on classroom management and different teaching styles and methods, and so on. There are weekly zoom classes you can attend, although there is no in-person component to the course I bought when it comes to the teaching part itself. Everyone at the TEFL Institute was extremely friendly, supportive, and fast to reply. I used the chat on their website and Tracy answered all of my questions. They also offer the option of a phone call with an advisor, and I spoke with Sórcha O' Connell. She was a huge help in working out which course made the most sense for my situation, since I was looking for something that would qualify me to work abroad in Europe.
Great support from Emma
May 04, 2026by: Sophie QuinnProgram: World Class - Government-Regulated Level 5 TEFL Diploma
I completed the 180 hour course and I would absolutely recommend it. Everything was organised in a way that made sense, it was straightforward to work through, and it still went into plenty of detail. Any time I had a question the TEFL team was ready to help out. Emma in particular was fantastic and answered everything I needed. It gives you solid training, useful information, and the skills you need to teach English as a foreign language. With that level of support from the staff, I would happily recommend the TEFL institute to anyone thinking about teaching English abroad.
A Solid Introduction to Teaching Online
May 03, 2026by: Rachel FitzgeraldProgram: Teach Confidently with this 10-Hour Practicum Course
I have just finished the 30 hour Teaching Online course and it has been a really solid, detailed introduction. There was so much useful information, and plenty to think about afterwards too. I especially liked the podcasts, the reflection tasks, and being pointed towards other resources, it all made the course genuinely enjoyable. Thanks TEFL Institute!
Practical Learning I Could Use Right Away
May 03, 2026by: Daniel KavanaghProgram: World Class - Government-Regulated Level 5 TEFL Diploma
I have completed two TEFL Institute courses, the TEFL Certificate and the IELTS Preparation course, and I found both of them really engaging and put together to a very high standard. As an ESL teacher, I have gotten a lot of practical use out of what I learned, and I would absolutely recommend the Institute to anyone wanting to earn a teaching qualification, since they let you move through the material at your own speed and fit it around whatever timeframe works best for you.
Well-Organized, Flexible, and Highly Useful TEFL Course
May 03, 2026by: Amy RyanI really enjoyed what the course covered, and I found the layout and all the resources genuinely useful. Being able to take it at my own pace was such a big deal for me, and honestly I still cannot believe how quickly I moved through it. Thank you to everyone who helped put this together, it definitely will not be the last course I purchase.
Proud TEFL Graduate Living My Teaching Dream Abroad
May 03, 2026by: Molly HayesFrom the moment I began this demanding course right through to finishing it, I have felt proud to graduate from such a great institution. If you are truly ready to take a leap of faith and travel, then this is the place to be. Just to add, I am now living and working in Thailand, and it is because that strong qualification gave me the chance to open doors. For that, I will always be grateful.
Support That Makes Studying Easier
May 02, 2026by: Sean PowerProgram: World Class - Government-Regulated Level 5 TEFL Diploma
I am having a great time taking my course with the TEFL Institute of Ireland. Everyone on the team has been so supportive, and Kate and Sarah in particular have made studying much easier by keeping me informed about the different opportunities that come with the course. The material is interesting and there are lots of resources available to help you get the best out of it. A big thank you, especially to Sarah, for the help you gave me recently!
Turning an Obstacle Into a Teaching Strength
May 02, 2026by: Lucy SheaProgram: World Class - Government-Regulated Level 5 TEFL Diploma

She genuinely pushed me even further toward my goal of becoming an English language teacher. With her guidance and encouragement, I managed to turn what had been one of my biggest obstacles into something that is now a real asset in my life as a teacher.
