With its world-famous music scene and revered culinary history, Jamaica is becoming an interesting destination for teachers seeking employment abroad. Teaching here places teachers in the heart of a distinct culture with a strong international presence. The Jamaican educational system may be different from what expat teachers are used to, but it is implementing an initiative to improve the literacy and mathematics skills of students. Six years of education in the country are compulsory and free. Because of recent educational reforms in Jamaica, many adults are interested in returning to school to upgrade their skills and qualifications. This creates more opportunities for international teachers to teach subject-specific material. The National Training Agency oversees the state vocational training centers and private academies. These schools offer programs focused on Jamaica's educational needs in more technical career paths like agriculture, construction, and technology. Apart from vocational training schools, Jamaica has five universities and several community colleges, some of which are state-owned and others privately funded.
