Be a Language Camp Counselor in Southern Germany (Bavaria)

Teach your native language and experience the real Germany—with young and enthusiastic counselors worldwide! 'LEOlingo Süd' organizes English and French language summer camps for German children in Bavaria, Southern Germany. Our focus is not on teaching the children intense vocabulary and grammar, but rather on helping them to understand and speak the language in a fun environment. Our counselors are English and French native speakers worldwide, including in the USA, Canada, Australia, and the UK! Each day, counselors create a varied and exciting program for the children, allowing them to learn about their counselor’s country and culture – from language games, funny self-written sketches, and crafts to national sports and adventure activities like waterskiing, caving, and rock climbing! The camps themselves take place in different villages, towns, and cities around Bavaria for six weeks during the summer break. These camps often take place in schools, Boy Scout areas, youth centers, monasteries, cabins, and even castles! Our summer season 2026 starts July 24th and ends September 11th.

A Guide to Teaching Abroad in Germany

Prepare to Teach Abroad

Set goals

Let’s get intentional about what you want from your time teaching in Germany! Take a moment to think about the experiences you’d like to gain and what will make this time meaningful to you. Here are a few ideas to inspire your journey:

  • Level up your German. Make it a goal to learn some German, whether it’s simple phrases or full conversations. Even though you’ll be teaching in English, your students and daily life will be great for practice.
  • Try new teaching approaches. Different classrooms require different techniques. Experiment with ways to engage German students and make learning fun—you’ll likely come home with fresh teaching skills.
  • Build your community. Meeting other expats and German locals can make your experience even more memorable. Connect with fellow teachers or locals to find people who share your interests.

Understand the benefits

Teaching in Germany is about so much more than just lesson plans and grading papers—it’s a chance to grow personally and professionally in ways that stick with you. Here’s why it’s worth the leap:

  • Build your career with flair. Teaching in Germany doesn’t just look impressive on a resume; it’s a real boost to your skills. You’ll come away with international experience, a broader teaching toolkit, and even some language skills to boot.
  • Master the art of connecting. Working with students from a different culture helps you become an adaptable communicator. It’s all about learning to relate, empathize, and build connections beyond language barriers.
  • Adventure right outside your door. Germany’s location in the heart of Europe means weekend trips to Paris, Prague, or Amsterdam are a breeze. Think of it as the ultimate hub for exploring Europe on a teacher’s schedule!

Things to know

Here’s a quick rundown to make sure you’re prepared for life as a teacher in Germany:

  • Language basics go a long way - You might not need to be fluent, but learning a few German phrases can be a huge help in daily life. Even simple greetings and polite phrases can make interactions easier—and it shows respect for the local culture.
  • Work permits - If you’re from outside the EU, a work visa is likely in your future! Make sure you’re aware of the visa requirements and start the application process early, as it can take a bit of time.
  • Budget smartly - Germany’s big cities, like Berlin and Munich, can be pricey for rent and everyday expenses. Before you arrive, plan a budget that works for you and look into affordable housing options like shared apartments or teacher accommodations.
