A Guide to Studying Journalism & Broadcasting Abroad

To be a successful journalist, individuals must go beyond the comfort and protection of their hometown bubble to see what the world has to offer. By doing so, individuals gain a perceptive quality to new and unusual things that makes for good news - and the politics involved with what is shared and how it’s presented. Study abroad programs in journalism and broadcasting will help you understand what it takes to succeed in unfamiliar environments and develop a broader global perspective.

Why Study Abroad

By choosing to study journalism and broadcasting abroad you will be taking a big step toward a career within the field, as you will be practicing many of the same requirements expected from the profession. You will gain cultural understanding and adaptability to new environments and beliefs which is necessary for quality reporting. Journalists often work in fast (and sometimes dangerous) environments, leaving no time for personal beliefs or judgements to get in the way of completing assignments. By experiencing new places and cultures, the veil of expectation, assumptions, and false judgements is challenged and your new perspective will be invaluable. Observing events as they unfold with fresh eyes gives journalists immeasurable experience needed when reporting news accurately and with as little bias as possible.

Locations

While popular study abroad destinations, such as Western Europe, Thailand, and Australia offer solid journalism study abroad programs, you may receive more hands on experience in destinations that are at the center of current global events. Even if you are not assigned to cover such events, the mere exposure benefits your ability to cover similar events in the future. Also, with watchdog journalism on the rise, you never know when you could catch the next top news story on your cell phone’s camera.

Israel. A country that is frequently experiencing conflict, Israel continues to get coverage on news networks all over the world. By studying journalism and broadcasting in Israel you will have direct access to one of the world’s most covered news stories. While tourists are highly advised to stay clear of certain areas, the country is relatively secure for tourists. Students who study abroad in Israel will have the chance to visit politically relevant sites that will give you better insight into current events.

Hong Kong. Hong Kong is a thriving city that is home to many news bureaus. Study abroad program in journalism and broadcasting located in Hong Kong will place you in a major global city which is greatly beneficial for anyone looking to get into international journalism. Hong Kong is a special administrative region of China that operates based on a capitalist economy and political system. In contrast, mainland China operates on a socialist system carried out by the rest of the country. While studying in Hong Kong, you will gain a broader perspective of news coverage as you learn journalism tactics that may differ from those of your own culture.

South Africa is a diverse nation with many ethnicities and nationalities present due to the apartheid and colonization that continually impacts society. There is never any shortage of activity going on in South Africa, allowing for strong and active journalism study abroad programs. Journalism programs in South Africa cover all aspects of news from print, to radio, and television. Students who study in South Africa will gain a unique educational experience while living and documenting one of the many African lifestyles.

Courses & Programs

Journalism study abroad programs can consist of a wide variety of topics spanning reporting, photography, and videography, as well as a wide variety of multimedia analyses classes. The world of journalism is slowly transforming into a multilayered platform, so a well-rounded education in the field is vital to understanding its many facets and intricacies. Print newspapers are slowly phasing out, and phasing in are social media, newspaper web versions, and more video coverage.

Even though the majority of journalism programs are shifting the attention to online models of reporting news, most classes will still cover the basics of print journalism. Journalism and broadcasting courses abroad will cover both the theoretical aspects of journalism as well as the essential practices. In addition to lectures, courses will most likely also consist of intensive class discussions, practical exercises and brainstorming, and visits from professionals in the industry.

Studying journalism abroad and interacting with professional journalists will provide students with insight into the various jobs available in the field, such as working for private agencies, major corporations, production companies, and as a freelance journalist or foreign correspondent. All students are eligible to take journalism classes abroad, although some of the more intensive, upper-division courses recommend that you are a journalism major.
