The medieval style of this oft-overlooked country will mesmerize you, thanks in large part to its picturesque architecture that dates back to the 14th century. You’ll feel like the smartest prince or princess in school getting ahead with your studies! What are you waiting for? Czech out the summer study abroad programs and watch your imagination come to life!

Why Study in the Czech Republic

Prague summer programs offer a wealth of academic, cultural, and adventurous opportunities in everybody’s favorite season. From history to politics to economics, the course possibilities are nearly endless – no surprise it is one of the most popular expat destinations in the world! When you’re not hitting the books, ride a riverboat down the Vltava, hike along the Jeseníky Mountains, and explore the Prague Jewish Museum.

Most classes are taught in English, but have you ever heard of Sigmund Freud and Oskar Schindler? Master their mother tongue by learning the Czech language while attending summer programs in Europe! Several programs offer homestay experiences with a tutor or a professor that will provide one-on-one time to practice the nuances of the language; not to mention, you’ll also benefit from their recommendations and advice about what to do and see in the area during your precious Prague summer moments!

Prague is the most popular place for studying abroad in the Czech Republic, but other little towns in the Bohemia regions will also sweep you off your feet with their charm.

Prague. The “City of a Hundred Spires” will make your eyes glaze over in delight with its endless galleries, castles, churches, synagogues, palaces, and gardens. Your Prague summer program class excursions could take you to see a ballet at the Prague State Opera House, to explore the Old Town Square, and to visit Terezín, a World War II transport camp. Prague summers are also the perfect time to visit the Pancava Waterfall, the Macocha Gorge (a sinkhole), and the Kampa Island.

You’re in for a treat during Prague summers because the festivals in this capital city are limitless. Indulge your tastebuds at the Czech Beer Festival in late May, which offers over 150 varieties of beer. Celebrate young musicians and performers during Prague Summer Nights from early June to early July. Opera lovers, don’t miss the Mozart performance at the Estates Theatre! Watch locals perform historic dances during Prague Folklore days at the end of July.

If you’re looking to satisfy your wanderlust with even more highlights of the Czech Republic, then you’ve picked a great time of year to take day trips outside of Prague. Stroll through the markets at the Mill Colonnade in Karlovy Vary, visit Kleť Mountain in Český Krumlov to see the Alps in the South, or gander at the gothic Karlštejn Castle just outside of Prague.

Tips for Summer in the Czech Republic

Don’t be the lad or damsel in distress that needs saving, keep the following tips in mind for your Prague summer program. While your program will offer you many sightseeing opportunities, prepare yourself for the long queues. Must sees include visiting Prague Castle and viewing the Astronomical Clock’s chime in your Prague summer program, which are popular landmarks.

The universities in the Czech Republic are friendly to pedestrians and bikers, and the best way to see the sights and soak up the sunshine is outside and in person. Be sure to pack comfortable walking shoes for the network of cobblestone lanes, an umbrella for the rainy days, and button-up shirts or classy dresses for nightlife events. Keep a travel guide handy that shares both Czech phrases and a map to make sure you don’t have (too many) navigation problems.

With the Czech Republic being smack dab in the middle of Europe, you’ll be able to easily access several other cities in Europe. Great places like Vienna, Milan, Budapest, Berlin, and many others are just a short trip away via trains, planes, and automobiles; see the sites and get even more pushpins on your world map wall-hanging during your summer abroad programs in Czech Republic.

Summer Scholarships Czech Republic

The summer months in the Czech Republic equate to the height of the tourist season. While program fees cover many of the costs, you’ll likely have to pay extra for airfare, extra activities, and extra meals. You’re already a smart cookie for choosing a study abroad Czech Republic summer program to save on tuition costs, but you know how you can save even more? Czech Republic summer study abroad scholarships! Here’s a few to get you started:

  • AIFS provides a handful of Prague summer study abroad scholarships that range from $250-$500 USD or 50 percent of the program costs. The deadline for many of the scholarships is March 1st, so put on your thinking cap for those essays.
  • TEAN is offering a summer scholarship with a value of $26,000 USD for undergraduate students. The selection criteria requires a one-page essay about what your summer study in Czech Republic would look like. Don’t miss this deadline!
  • IES Abroad awards summer scholarships and grants up to $1,000 USD based on need, diversity, and merit. Scholarship applicants need to be attending a school that is a member of the IES Abroad Consortium, so make sure you qualify before applying.

You’ll find a more extensive list of Czech Republic summer study abroad scholarships by visiting the's Scholarship Directory. The list of scholarships might seem a bit overwhelming, so keep tabs on the qualifications, deadlines, and requirements before applying. Remember to contact the program coordinator as well for tips and advice. That little extra money will go a long way when you’re jonesing for another bite of grilled makrela (mackerel)!

Benefits & Challenges

From taking notes about the Czech Republic’s Jewish history to seeing Prague lit up at night at the infamous Charles Bridge, a study abroad Czech Republic summer program is the key to your traveler’s heart. You’ll gain international skills, which will come in handy for any career that is calling your name. Plus, students who want to take courses in music will rejoice with Prague summer program opportunities to produce jazz, classical music, and folk music in acoustic spaces.

Unfortunately, as the number of foreigners traveling to the Czech Republic has increased, so has the number of common crimes. Exercise common sense with your wallet by not carrying large amounts of cash, keeping it in a secure place at all times, and not taking it out on busy streets. Consider keeping your wallet and passport safe on you at all times with a money belt. Be wary of pickpocketing as well, especially in high-traffic areas, such as train stations and public parks.

Whether you’re studying Central European literature or climbing to the top of Castle Hill, a Prague summer program will have you under its spell with its unique culture. Get the happily ever after you’re looking for with a summer abroad in the Czech Republic!
