Originally called Working Weekends on Organic Farms when started in 1971 in England, WWOOF now stands for World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms in recognition of our organization’s global nature. WWOOF Portugal is part of this and our nonprofit association is based in Lisbon. Launched in 2008, we specialize in exchange programs and volunteering. We provide participants accommodation and meals, as well as lots of opportunities to experience organic lifestyles.
Our volunteers are called WWOOFers, all motivated individuals who have contributed thousands of accumulated hours spent on assisting organic farmers. WWOOF has gained a reputation for having made a huge contribution in the broader organic world, as we bring together an increasing number of people from around the world into direct interaction with permaculture organic growers. Our organization continues to grow, and “to Wwoof” is a term in its own much like “to Google”.
