Zanzibar is a melting pot of African, Arabic, Indian, and European cultural influences. Taarab, as the island's traditional music, is the best example of this mix and the influences of diverse cultures.
The Dhow Countries Music Academy (DCMA) in Zanzibar is a leading cultural institution in East and Central Africa for music education, research, conservation, and the advancement of traditional music on local, regional, and international levels. The academy also provides music education at private schools for children under ten.
Volunteers and interns can:
- Teach all kinds of musical instruments
- Provide children with music education
- Design/create or restore instruments
- Handle public relations
- Handle librarianship
International participants can participate in DCMA lessons or activities free of charge as compensation for their efforts.
