Program Summary

Explore Amsterdam with a critical eye through an intensive summer course that uses the city as a living laboratory. Students will explore the relationship between globalization, cities, and creativity. The program combines discussion-based seminars and theoretical readings with extensive fieldwork in major locations across Amsterdam, from the museum and canal districts in the historic centre to more marginal or experimental sites like art incubators, urban planning projects, and squats in the outskirts.

The course examines the ways global practices in urban redevelopment, art, and media are taking shape in a European city that has long functioned as a centre of cultural exchange. The program uses Amsterdam as a stimulating case study to critically examine the notion of the ‘creative city’.
