A nice cultural experience

I really enjoyed my stay in Chile, both on and off campus. I especially appreciated the fact that we had an opportunity to travel both within and outside Chile, and travel was even actively encouraged. Sometimes, I didn't feel like I was treated for the 39-year-old woman that I am, and of course, all my course mates were much younger, but I still mostly had a great time with them. The extracurricular activities were quite excellent, and the Chilean students were really friendly. I appreciated the multiculturalism in UVM and the opportunity to learn about the Mapuche people - the language and the culture, as well as political issues.

Studying abroad in Viña del Mar and attending the University of Viña del Mar(UVM) allowed me to love all that Latin America has to offer while still receiving a great education. There are always so many steps to studying abroad, but UVM, Viña del Mar, and the community really helped me in all aspects. Both homestay and personal housing options were easy and affordable for all students. The school program was flexible with course changes and allowed my credits to easily be converted back to my home institution. UVM performed a great number of activities and cultural events both organized by the school and privately. The transportation network is fantastic between all of the neighboring cities and we were always informed and given help/suggestions from the school on how to safely live and study in the city. Being as Viña del Mar is a very central Chilean city, we had the opportunity to visit the Andes Mountains, Patagonia, the famous Atacama desert, and many more beautiful Chilean destinations. Studying abroad will always have challenges, but UVM really helped me get through it all and enjoy my semester abroad to the absolute fullest. I absolutely can't thank the school and city enough and I look forward to visiting Chile again!

A once in a lifetime experience

As a Norwegian student of political science, I had the opportunity to study something entirely different for one semester. I decided to do an exchange semester in a Spanish-speaking country as I wanted to improve my Spanish, and chose Chile mainly because of its stunning nature and its safety. After almost 6 months in Chile I have indeed had some wonderful experiences in the mighty Andes mountains, the magical Atacama desert and along the beautiful beaches of Víña del Mar, where my exchange university, Universidad Viña del Mar, is situated. Furthermore, despite some saying that Chile is no longer as safe as it used to be, I have never once felt unsafe, and I haven’t had any bad experiences. Still, my favorite part about Chile is the warmth of the Chilean people. I elected to stay with a Chilean host family, with which I couldn’t be happier. They helped me practice my Spanish and included me in family celebrations, such as when we celebrated the National day of Chile on September 18th. At University I felt very welcome, and thanks to the International Club at UVM in particular, I made lots of friends from Chile and various other countries, and had loads of fun. With regards to my classes and professors, they far exceeded my expectations, across the board. I’ve learnt a lot about Chilean culture and society, and vastly improved my Spanish thanks to them. I truly could not be more pleased. I must also express my gratitude to the administrative section of UVM for making this a very smooth experience. To conclude, I would strongly recommend the Spanish Semester Program at UVM to anyone interested in improving their Spanish and going on and adventure that they’ll cherish for life.
