The Institute for European Studies (IES) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel is a policy think tank centered around the European Union from an international perspective. We are an academic Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence that propels academic education and research in different disciplines while offering services to the general public as well as stakeholders, scholars, and policy makers. IES explores EU law and policies within the context of global governance and globalization, focusing specifically on international institutions and affairs.
Our activities concentrate on different ways that politics, law, and institutions connect with each other at an international level as well as within the EU and its member states. The disciplines applied at our Institute include social and political sciences, law, communication sciences, and economics. Our academic work and activities are organized into clusters: Environment and sustainable development; EU foreign and security policy; Migration, diversity and justice; Educational Development; and European economic governance. We form academic partnerships with several universities as well as with private and public institutions in Belgium and overseas.
