Fukushima, Japan was hit by Tōhoku's 9.0 magnitude earthquake and a massive tsunami with waves more than 10 meters high in 2011. As a result, the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant led to three nuclear meltdowns, hydrogen-air chemical explosions, and the release of radioactive material. Leaving more than 160,000 refugees displaced from their homes, the effects of Fukushima Daiichi sent waves of concern across the international nuclear industry. Classified as a Level 7 event by the International Nuclear Event Scale, it was considered one of the world’s largest nuclear disasters.

Nearly three years after the accident, the province of Fukushima has pledged to be sourced by 100 percent renewable sources by 2040. Today, Fukushima is making strides toward accomplishing this renewable future through solar and off-shore wind initiatives.
