Teaching and Educational Support

We seek volunteers to help address the deprivation of learning and teaching aids and to support and share knowledge with our teachers in less-resourced schools.

Help in a range of subjects including Mathematics, Science, Geography, Social Science, History, Business Education, Art, and Music, as well as English. Placements are available at the nursery, primary, and secondary schools in Ghana, where volunteers initially either shadow or teach under the supervision of a local teacher. Once acquainted with the school and the curriculum, they get the chance to teach independently. 

It is important that volunteers are flexible, as there are a number of other tasks they can help with. These might include helping children with their homework, arranging games and activities, cleaning the classroom, and assisting teachers with administrative duties.

It is not compulsory to have prior teaching experience or to have completed formal teacher training to volunteer in Ghana for this program. Volunteers' level of involvement within the classroom can be tailored to suit their skills and interests. The willingness to share and the ability to be proactive are important.

Join the Solutions For Life Initiative Ghana (SFLIG) in this program and support activities at an orphanage home. Volunteers help care for the children—especially babies and toddlers—by bathing, feeding, dressing, and playing with them.

Working at an orphanage is likely to be one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences of your life. Assist in the care of destitute and abandoned children and orphans, some of whom have lost their parents to HIV/AIDS. Day-to-day tasks include:
- Helping with cooking, cleaning, and feeding the younger kids at mealtimes
- Arranging games and fun activities
- Helping school-age children with their homework
- Monitoring the cleanliness of all the children and teaching good hygiene habits

You can also assist with teaching duties, benefiting many of the children through a little one-on-one tutoring. There may also be basic building and repair work at the orphanage. 

Some experience working with children is preferred; as is a responsible, enthusiastic, and compassionate attitude. Initiative and self-motivation are important. This is an ideal program for participants who are on a career break, gap year, or vacation.

Join a volunteer program abroad that aims to equip individuals with intellectual disabilities with the attitudes and vocational skills to make them functional and employable.

The placement is at a life community school, a boarding facility in Ghana for the intellectually challenged. Most of the children here have families who neglected them because of their disabilities. The government runs the center, while the day-to-day activities are left to kind-hearted individuals and groups. With just five teachers and two House Mothers who manage 74 kids, they find it hard to monitor and give each child attention as well as quality, three square meals every day. 

Therefore, volunteers are urgently needed to help with all activities at the community school. Duties include: 
- Providing life skills
- Teaching basic everyday activities like dressing up, wearing shoes, combing the hair, and brushing the teeth
- Helping to develop their intelligence quotient (IQ)
- Organizing fun games and activities, enabling the kids to play and interact with one another

Gain practical healthcare experience through our Medical Placement Program in Ghana. This program is ideal for pre-med students, medical professionals, and public health students or graduates seeking international clinical exposure.

Participants are placed in hospitals, clinics, maternity centres, pharmacies, laboratories, and community health facilities, where they work alongside experienced healthcare professionals. Depending on your background and interests, you may observe or assist with patient care, maternal health services, laboratory procedures, medication management, physiotherapy sessions, and community health outreach activities.

The placement offers valuable insight into Ghana's healthcare system and the challenges and opportunities of healthcare delivery in a developing country. Responsibilities vary according to qualifications, experience, and local needs.

Beyond the placement, participants experience Ghana's rich culture, friendly communities, and vibrant way of life. This program combines professional development, cultural exchange, and meaningful service, making it an excellent opportunity for those pursuing a career in healthcare.

The Ghana Education Service has recently included arts as part of the curriculum at primary schools to help develop the creativity of pupils before they transition to junior high school. Since our education system is fairly new, we have a lack of creative art teachers; hence, the desperate need for volunteers to help teach the subject. When school is not in session, the project is carried out in orphanage homes as an after-school program.

Volunteers support the cognitive development of children through creative methods using constructive materials, paints, clay, and drawings. They also help keep the classroom clean, teach basic English, and report daily activities to the local teachers. In addition to lessons in creative arts, volunteers can spend time assisting the teachers in other subjects.

This is a great program for creative individuals, as they have the opportunity to design and implement recreational and educational activities for children. We encourage them to use their skills and interests to develop fun activities such as music and dance, arts and crafts, and more.

Volunteer Abroad

I signed up for a volunteer trip not knowing how I would forever be changed.  I worked with a refugee camp school and orphanage during my 1st trip volunteering With SFLIG. I have since made life long connections and friends.  Thank you for giving me a purpose to serve in a very special way.

This experience is one of inspiration. I gave the children the supplies I brought. I have help and worked along side loving care givers teaching, learning to cool and encouraging the children in every way. Everyone has been kind and welcoming and the children have captured my heart forever.

Got to experience 9 different orphanages while here in Ghana and everyone provided a unique opportunity in building relationships with all of the children and directors. My experience with the children were astounding they had so much love for me even in their poverty their smiles shined in my heart . Had a opportunity to visit a mentally challenged facility and they were able to show their love also ,there were many physical needs there as far as their facility goes but children were very loving just tremendous I recommend anyone who wants a life changing experience to come to Ghana and solutions for life and see the love these children have to give.

Life-changing

Words cannot describe how life changing my experience in Ghana was. The support I received, the warm welcoming, the friendly people, and most importantly, the sweetest kids. Being in Future Stars Organization through SFLIG was the best decision I ever made, so happy with the outcome and how I was able to help them, because they extremely need our help. Hopefully I will be coming back soon!

Volunteering in Ghana

I went in without many expectations and I’m so glad I did because I ended up doing things I would have never expected. I signed up for a medical program. The local team was great in setting up outreach programs which were fantastic (although of course with any developing country the frustration always lies in whether or not the patients will follow up or be able to afford to continue their treatment), however my day to day “work” in the clinic or hospital would be better suited for a medical student (which I’m sure is the majority of medical internship volunteers), not a practicing provider. It was mostly observation and education. I truly did appreciate the education as I don’t see tropical diseases where I’m from nor do I see many HIV patients. It was fantastic seeing and learning about diseases I had only read about. But, i came to Ghana to be productive. A few weeks in I did see an opportunity to be more productive when one of the boys in our orphanage was not enrolled in school and so I decided to move away from the medical program and more into teaching him English and how to read. The local team okayed the switch (even though I still went to the clinic a couple of times a week). This by far was the biggest challenge and I am so grateful to have taken this on. This little boy taught me so much more than I ever expected to learn.  I fell in love with the boys and in the orphanage and the kids in the community.

I have been in many developing countries so nothing really surprised me here. The biggest disappoint for me was all the trash everywhere (beach, street, parks). Our accommodations were clean and comfortable.

The local team manager and her staff were GREAT. They took such good care of us. I really appreciate all the steps they took to ensure our safety, comfort and transition into a new country. I also appreciate how flexible they were in me changing up my program, as mentioned above.

TIPS: Go with an open mind because things don’t always go as planned. Be flexible. Be patient. I think an actual practitioner needs to be aware that the only hands on experience will be through outreach programs that sally can definitely set up. That practitioner should be prepared to either bring medicine or purchase medicine for the people after seeing them because the people won’t be able to buy it for themselves most likely. I ended up exceeding my budget (which I’m ok with) by buying medication for the people to at least start their treatments but it’s something to consider prior to going.

My heart is so full!!

Going to Ghana to volunteer with children sounded like the best idea when presented to me by my friend and travel companion Bailey. Little did know how much the experience would fill my heart! The beauty of the Ghanaian culture and people were like no other. I felt safe, welcomed and very well taken care of at all times. The kindness and warmth in each one of their hearts was pretty extraordinary, unlike some other countries I have visited.  The affection, smiles and laughter from the children I worked with will be in my thoughts and heart forever. The Love Volunteer staff members were so helpful in creating a smooth process from start to finish with regular check-ins, and always being available to assist. I have already recommended this experience to family and friends and would love to go to Ghana!

Life changing experience!

I went to Ghana and stayed with the most wonderful host family. I was introduced to an amazing culture and felt very welcomed and supported. I learned a lot about myself while working in Ghana. The people of Ghana have the biggest and purest hearts. I will never forget the people I met the relationships I formed while in Ghana. I will forever have a second family.
