SOL Education Abroad- Hereida, Costa Rica

I thoroughly enjoyed my semester abroad in Costa Rica with SOL. We had cultural activities every week, along with included program excursions about every three weeks. Our directors always pushed us to speak Spanish around each other if we wanted to become fluent by the end of the semester. Living with my host family was one of my favorite parts about being abroad. Having a place to call home with a host mom who genuinely cared about my well-being was so comforting, and not to mention, the home-cooked meals were amazing! I became so independent and confident in just one semester- if you are thinking about studying abroad, stop thinking and just do it!!

You'll want to go for two sessions

I made the mistake of only taking on class session during my SOL education. The three weeks I spent were fantastic, yo aprendí mucho español, I made fast friends with my peers, the instructors were very nice, I learned how to operate in a foreign city (from haggling to buying school supplies), every day was great. The only thing I regret is not staying longer.

Study abroad

Studying abroad is all about adventure, learning, and becoming worldly. As long as you are traveling and exploring a new place in the world, you can not chose incorrectly. Have an open mind. Don't be afraid to try new foods, a different cultural activity and stop outside of your comfort zone.

Trip of a lifetime

Costa Rica with Sol Study Abroad was an experience that I am never going to forget. I learned things and met people that will continue to impact my life in the years to come. Our directors led us every step of the way and made the experience great for everyone. I can't wait to return to Costa Rica to visit my host family and friends that I made.I would recommend Sol to anyone. Pura Vida!

Great program!

This program gave me one of the best experiences of my life and was very affordable. I wish I would've done it sooner in my college career so I could do it again before I graduated! It helped me learn Spanish and provided me with friends across the globe.

SOL Education Abroad: Heredia, Costa Rica

The SOL Education Abroad program in Heredia, Costa Rica is *the* organization to study abroad with. The price is fair, inexpensive (in comparison with many other abroad programs), and worth every penny. I participated in the Summer 2017 program and had the summer of a lifetime. The program directors truly care about each student in the program. They want to get to know you, support you in every aspect of your journey, and they want to help you learn the language and about their culture. I knew that if I had any problem whatsoever, Leydi, Adri, Jesse, Angie, and Janiva would be there to support me and help me solve whatever the problem may be. My host family was beyond amazing and taught me more Spanish than I had dreamed of learning. I gained such a confidence in my speaking skills and in myself through this program and I would do it again in a heart beat. The excursions are amazing, the classes are fulfilling, and the people are the best. One of the excursions, White Water Rafting, happened to be my best day of 2017 as well as one of the best days of my life. I cannot recommend this program enough, and I wish nothing but the best for everyone involved in the program. Do yourself a favor and sign up for this program immediately!!

Heredia, Costa Rica

My experience in Costa Rica with SOL was amazing. I made so many great friends and learned so much about Costa Rica. SOL played a major role by helping us experience the true culture of Costa Rica. The excursions and different cultural activities really expanded our ability to fully live the Costa Rican lifestyle. The classes and academic opportunities helped me to improve my Spanish tremendously as well. They provided a safe and friendly living environment by placing us with families that would best suit our needs.

Great program!

My experience in Costa Rica was life changing! My Spanish speaking abilities have improved greatly. When I returned to the States, I got a job with many Spanish speakers, and I would speak with them every day to continue practicing. This program also brought me a family. My fellow Solmates have become some of my closest friends. We still keep in contact via GroupMe and SnapChat. Costa Rica in general is a beautiful country with many great adventures to be had. It was the pinnacle of 2017, and I will carry those memories and experiences with me for the rest of my life.

Study abroad with SOL!

If you're looking to study abroad, SOL is the way to go. The activities you do really strengthen the experience. It appeals to both the adventurer in white water rafting, but also the city geek through museum tours, market tours, coffee tours, etc. The directors are so friendly and want you to have the best experience while pushing you outside your comfort zone in learning a language. They really encourage you to speak Spanish and talk with locals. You have to opportunity to volunteer at a local school, and that was one of my favorite experiences! The program really makes you feel like a local and not a tourist visiting. The best part of SOL is the host families you stay with. They make you feel right at home, and some of my favorite memories came from drinking coffee and talking with my host family! The things you experience are ones you'll never forget during your time abroad with SOL!

Costa Rica experience

I was able to experience different cultural aspects of Costa Rica such as their food which was delicious. The experience of living with host families was amazing. The families were so nice, they made you feel at home. SOL made the experience a breeze with the transportation to and from the airport. The extracurricular activities were interesting and unique, such as the rescue center where we were up and close to sloths and the resort experience at Arenal Volcano. I can’t wait to go back and revisit Costa Rica!

Un viaje increíble en Costa Rica

I had an amazing time on this trip, and loved every bit of it. I greatly enjoyed how we had several cultural activities planned, as well as excursions on the weekends to notable locations in Costa Rica. However, we also had free time to do things that we found interesting, and the great part was, Costa Rica is not lacking in things to do. It was an amazing experience, and I would go back 10 times over. I will say, the difficult part, if you’re serious about learning the language, can be committing to speaking in Spanish all the time, as you are surrounded with other students from the states. However, if you are intentional and put in the effort, your Spanish will grow leaps and bounds with this program. I hope this review helps, enjoy your trip!!!

Greatest choice of my life!

I highly recommend studying abroad with SOL! I had an amazing experience and my Spanish proficiency really improved over only 3 weeks! I decided to study abroad senior year of college during winter break because I didn't have enough room in my schedule to do a full semester, and I really wish I could have done a whole semester. Costa Rica is a beautiful place with amazing people and culture, this was a perfect opportunity to step out of my comfort zone. I chose to speak as little English and as much Spanish as possible. SOL's amazing staff and teachers at Universidad Latina made this experience SO worthwhile. I wouldn't trade this experience for anything.

Heredia, Costa Rica

This was the greatest experience of my life. The host family that I was assigned to live with was amazingly kind and caring. I felt like I was part of their family and they gave me the opportunity to speak to new people of different ages.

A second family

On my first night in Costa Rica, after being welcomed at the airport by my SOL program leaders, I was welcomed by my host family into their home. I was terrified, so much that I could barely understand a word of Spanish in those first moments. My Mama Tica could’ve quickly and easily become frustrated, but instead she sat down next to me and we typed to each other with Google Translate. She was patient, caring, and empathetic of my situation. Although this is only one specific experience, it’s a good representation of the whole SOL program. You’re given the independence and ability to do things on your own without help. However, if you need help, like I did that first night, the SOL Costa Rica staff are ready to patiently guide you as much or as little as you need, all with incredible care. In my 6 weeks studying abroad, I became part of two new families: firstly, my host family, but also my Solmate family. I hope that many others will share that experience, because it was one of the most meaningful and lasting pieces of my program.

Great program!

I had a fantastic time during this program. I stayed for three sessions (9 weeks) with the sweetest Mama Tica who taught me so much about Costa Rican culture. The excursions that Sol took us on were so well planned and fun. They took us to the top places in the country and in the subsequent weeks I was still able to travel to more destinations on my own! The Nicaragua optional weekend trip was also one of my favorite parts of the program because it was such a different environment and so eye opening as well. I did think my classes could have been a bit more challenging but I understand it is quite difficult to get a lot of content in only three weeks. The on-site directors are so welcoming and so encouraging for you to improve your Spanish. Overall, it was an incredible experience that changed my career aspirations and pushed me to apply for post-graduate opportunities abroad!

Fun experience

For the most part, the excursions really made the trip memorable. During normal weekdays, my days would be filled with schoolwork due to the fast pace of the course; however, this didn’t stop me from having fun. I definitely improved my Spanish during my 3 weeks there and hope to someday remember it as a lovely vacation from the loud streets of Houston.

Life changing

The most challenging and yet worthwhile thing I have ever undertook. I’m convinced Costa Rica is the most beautiful place on earth. The campus of Universidad de Latina Heredia is an amazing open air campus that allows you to appreciate all of the outside wonders while learning a beautiful language. All professors are bilingual and were able to help me in English if needed. We only attended class 3 hours a day and were typically done by noon. But, for those 3 hours we did nothing but learn Spanish, it was rigorous but short. My host family was spectacular and SOL did a great job pairing roommates. Janiva and Jessie are extremely kind and helpful directors. They were always there if anybody needed them. I traveled 13 weekends out of the 15 I was there for, Costa Rica’s compact but yet seemingly endless geography combined with a high exchange rate led to abundant traveling. I thought about Costa Rica everyday for nearly the first 3 months after I returned. It was spectacular.

Summer in Heredia

My time with Sol in Costa Rica was one of the most transformative (and fun) experiences of my life! I had never been out of the country before, but I am so glad I left my comfort zone and came to Costa Rica. The directors at Sol -- Janiva, Jessenia, Angie, and the others -- are all amazing at what they do and really care about you as a person. There is such a tight-knit community within Sol, and I left having made amazing friends. My mama tica and the rest of my host family were also incredible. They really helped me feel loved and at home and were so helpful to me both in navigating the country and in practicing my Spanish. I had taken years of Spanish -- including AP in high school and multiple college classes -- but never felt confident speaking the language until now.

The planned excursions and cultural activities for the first three weeks are amazing. My personal favorite was the Manuel Antonio beach trip, where you get to go to a private beach inside a national park and see sloths in the jungle. The set-up of the planned excursions is great, because we were able to familiarize ourselves with the country as we traveled in a big group. Then when it was time to plan weekend trips and travel independently from Sol, we were ready and had gained confidence.

My advice would be don't be afraid to venture off with friends to new places, go to intercambios and make friends with local students, and try to take advantage of unique opportunities you hear about. A bunch of us found out Ed Sheeran was coming to Costa Rica, so we all bought tickets to see him with the Ticos. We also went to one of the national team soccer games! So much fun.

Sol and Costa Rica are both absolutely amazing, and I would recommend them to anyone in a heartbeat. I cried as my flight home from San Jose was taking off because I didn't want to leave. To put it simply, this has been the best summer of my life.

My summer experience in Costa Rica

I really enjoyed my time with SOL in Costa Rica. During your first summer session, they arrange a lot of activities for you and there are excursions every weekend. After that, you are more free to plan your own trips and go wherever you want. This set-up was very good because it allowed us to gain confidence while we traveled as a larger group and then we were more prepared to travel on our own in the following weeks. I really enjoyed my host mom, and I loved the neighborhood I lived in because I always felt safe. My only difficulty in the program was that it was really hard to just speak Spanish because I was with so many American students that were at totally different levels of Spanish. That being said, it's totally possible to speak only Spanish, you just have to commit to doing so. I felt that my experience with SOL helped me to grow in my independence. I saw a lot of beautiful places, met a lot of cool people, and tried lots of new things. What more can you ask from a study abroad program?

Heredia, Costa Rica, summer 2017

I have enjoyed my time with SOL immensely, from the immersive Spanish experience I got during class and with my homestay to the adventures around Costa Rica in which I have been able to partake. I really appreciated how intensive the academic side of the program was because it pushed me to really focus on improving my communication in Spanish. I also really liked the Conversation Club because it was fun to have opportunities to practice Spanish with people other than the professors or other Solmates.

New life

Everything that has happened to me in the month of June is completely indescribable. Starting from flying to Costa Rica to meeting my host family to cultivating myself in the everyday life of Ticos. I relive the moments of my time in Costa Rica almost everyday. The taste of the other life was definitely alot sweeter than the life I've lived. The family I was paired with was so loving and funny. I couldn't wait to get home each day just to be around them. My Mama Tica is a godsend, she is such a sweet person. The language barrier between her and I was trivial and non existant after a while. I miss talking to her after school. Being engulfed in forgein culture where I'm the foreigner was the best thing I could have ever done. Meeting new friends( Ticos and Americans), learning new things about Costa Rican history along with the excursions... I died and went to heaven. I can not describe my whole experience into just one word, it would be insulting.
