Short program with long term positive impact
Submitted by Savannah Johnson - Chicago, IL United States | January 27, 2018
Though 15 days can hardly do Thailand justice, this short program leaves a long term positive impact on those who participate. As a program leader for several different international/experiential education programs for high school students, I can attest to the unparalleled quality of Walking Tree programs, especially the programs in Thailand. They encompass a phenomenal balance of cultural immersion, service, and outdoor adventure, and, because the contacts and partners Walking Tree has in-country, students get to know so many people they would likely otherwise not encounter. From local guides, to elephant sanctuary owners, to environmental activists, and NGO employees, students who participate on this program get a whole range of perspectives on human-wildlife conflict and leave with a much more nuanced understanding of both animal welfare and environmental issues – issues which are relevant in every country around the world. They also have several opportunities to build independent travel skills and have a hefty dose of fun along the way. I highly recommend this program for high school students and think it is an incredible opportunity to reap the benefits of living beyond the comfort zone.
