Amazing, Incredible, Jaw Dropping

by: Claire Bricknell - United StatesProgram: SIT Study Abroad: Ghana: Globalization, Cultural Legacies

Ghana was incredible! The warm staff, delicious food, and stunning landscapes made my experience unforgettable. I really enjoyed the experiential learning aspect of the program, as getting to interact with locals, go to museums, and travel around the country deepened my understanding of Ghanaian culture in a way a classroom wouldn't be able to.

Best Semester Abroad Program EVER!

by: Leyla Surmeli - United StatesProgram: SIT Study Abroad: India: Public Health, Gender, & Sexuality

I learned so much in this program! I was fully immersed in Indian culture with my homestay and incredible academic staff. I gained so much knowledge and expertise in public health in a local and global context. It was the most rewarding semester of college I’ve ever had! I’m so glad I got this experience and I would 100% recommend this program to others.

Interning in the Middle East

by: Alexandria Williams - United StatesProgram: SIT Study Abroad: Jordan: Counseling & Humanitarian Action
9

I found this study abroad program to be an invaluable experience that I can carry over to both my academic and professional endeavors. It also reinforced my values of inclusivity and compassion, encouraging me to explore more into humanitarian action as a field and even intern with other non-profit organizations in the future. Our academic advisor, Dr. Ashraf Alqudah, was an amazing mentor; very knowledgeable, accommodating, and kind. Amman as a city was also such a cool experience. It was my first time in the region so I loved becoming familiar with the local customs and people. One thing that I think could have been better though was the internship placement. Many of my peers had great placements, but for me personally I wish it was more structured and that there was a translator since many of the staff only spoke Arabic.

I decided to apply to an international program so that I could gain a perspective totally different from what I had grown up with. The world is so vast and has limitless opportunities so I knew that I needed to dip my toe into this pool of opportunity. Gettysburg College, along with different schools across the nation, offer the incredible opportunity to go beyond your personal borders and live in a place that most people only dream of going to.

I have always loved traveling. Once I saw that this program was an option for me, there was no way I could pass it up. I had never been overseas before, and this was a chance to study a topic I'm passionate about. I knew that this would be an amazing and life changing experience that would be a crime to let go to waste.

I was inspired to go abroad because I was seeking a life-changing experience that would somehow enlighten me with new career aspirations. Naively enough, I was fully expecting that at some point in my time abroad the lightbulb above my head would light up and tell me what my path should be in life. While this didn't necessarily happen, I was hopeful nonetheless.
