Shanti Uganda is a registered Canadian charity, non-governmental organization, and nonprofit medical facility based in Kasana, Uganda. Established in 2008 by Natalie Angell-Besseling, a doula and yoga teacher with a background in international development, Shanti Uganda is dedicated to bringing together traditional and modern birthing practices while increasing awareness in local communities affected by HIV/AIDS, poverty, and war.
We run the Shanti Uganda Birth House, a center supported by local community members and our women’s group. After the opening of this facility in 2010, our programs now consist of workshops for teen girls, community garden, and full-service maternity center. We follow a unique, sustainable model that incorporates collaborative and professional care into a maternal health approach that tackles related challenges. This model is applicable across Sub-Saharan Africa and other poorly resourced regions throughout the globe.
