The Shanti Bhavan Children's Project is a nonprofit organization in Bangalore. Our name translates to “haven of peace”, which is exactly what we provide to local children through our K-12 residential school in Baliganapalli, Tamil Nadu. Our school administers the ISC and ICSE exams under the accreditation and authorization of the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE). We currently cater to 200 students, whom 180 are ‘Dalits’ - a political name for lower caste members in India, though the use of this term has been labeled unconstitutional by the country’s National Commission for Scheduled Castes.
Established in 1997, Shanti Bhavan strives to support the educational needs of socially and economically disadvantaged children in rural India - especially in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. We help them become productive and successful members of society. We take in kids as young as four years old and who come from below-poverty families. Their poor economic and social situation means less to zero exposure to any form of education. Hence, we offer free education until they are 17 years old. Subsequently, we fund the college education of high-performing students.
