STC summer internship

I am truly fortunate and deeply grateful for the time I spent with the Serve the City (STC) -Madrid team. If you are passionate about helping others and making a difference, then you will love this internship!
In one of my first discussions with Warren, I expressed interest in learning about the business development side of nongovernmental organizations and was assigned my first task of creating a “Start-Up” Guide detailing Serve the City International’s initial development process and best-use practices. I was able to dissect and analyze the back-end of business from core team development, marketing strategies, project management, communication practices, legal formation, website and media development and much more. I learned how vital the framework of these components are to the success of future organizational endeavors. This project included the opportunity to collaborate with STC International leaders at over 100 locations and 40 different countries. Conducting myself within a global community taught me the importance of data sharing and collaboration among international hubs. I gained knowledge about the similarities and diversity of needs and challenges that organizations face throughout the world. During informational interviews with STC International leaders, I advanced in my active listening and critical thinking skills, as leaders shared personal business development success and failure stories, then looked to me for information and solutions based on my research.
Another incredibly rewarding project was co-leading international volunteers in coordinating and implementing a two week program to educate Spanish students on the value of social responsibility. Throughout the week we lead activities and facilitated reflections centered on community involvement and social impact. This led to the success of our first service excursion, handing lunch packs we prepared to homeless individuals. More than just offer food, we encouraged students to converse and connect with the individuals whom often feel neglected or abandoned. This experience had such a tangible influence on not only the homeless, but the students, teachers, and international volunteers, as well. It was truly profound to experience the reactions of everyone involved as we communicated with love and empathy.
Aside from the projects, the culture of STC-Madrid is enough to make the experience worthwhile. As an intern, you are treating not only as part of the team, but as part of a family. The authentic values demonstrated by the entire organization enabled me to feel supported and genuinely inspired. This experience gave me newfound perceptions of entrepreneurship, global collaboration, social responsibility, self-efficacy and humility.
The most amazing summer with the most amazing people!

If you have ever wanted to go abroad and feel like your time will have an impact, choose Serve the City! An organization with more heart and passion than any i've worked with before, Warren and his team work so hard to make Madrid a place where non-profit is growing and volunteerism has a true impact on the community. This past summer, I was given the task of researching, writing and compiling a business proposal for Serve the City, a task which was challenging, rewarding and actually made an difference in the organization. Not only was I given real work, my fellow fabulous Interns and I were asked to pitch a fundraising idea, formulate the idea, plan it out and actually host the fundraiser. Wow right? We worked for 5 weeks to establish relationships with local businesses, write and compose content for social media advertisements and campaigns and gathered materials for an auction we hosted. In five short weeks, we all gained more work experience, worldly knowledge and relationship building than ever before. Our fundraiser was an awesome way to end our time with Serve the City, as we raised over a thousand euros for the organization, and ultimately for the people they serve! If you are on the fence about going to Spain... don't be!! Pick an organization that will nurture you, make you laugh, give you actual hard and rewarding work, and make you feel like an important and valued member of the team.
