Marine conservation in the Caribbean

by: PaulProgram: Sea Turtles Conservation Assistant

One day in Las Terrenas I flew to the Dominican Republic for six weeks and got involved in the volunteer project for the marine conservation program. Most of the days started with trash collection activities on the beaches and rivers or making beach profiles. For data collection and monitoring, we also often went snorkeling or diving. At lunchtime we got a bit of time off so we could eat, shower and change before heading back to the office in the afternoon. The work there was quite varied, some days we focused on researching different topics or processing the data we collected. On other days, the focus was on preparing publications or presentations. In general, working with the other volunteers and my coordinator was actually always fun! Accommodation The accommodation was well-equipped, well-maintained and clean. In addition, the apartment was located in the middle of the resort Las Terrenas on the peninsula Samana and you could reach everything in walking distance. On days when I didn't want to walk, it was also easy to take a motorcycle cab, the so-called Motoconchos. Spanish Language Course First of all, I can say that in my opinion you don't really need any previous knowledge of Spanish to participate in this project. The people here are incredibly accommodating and if you don't know a word, they will always help you. The Spanish course, however, was still very good and served me to improve my language skills. Impact of the coronavirus on the project The Coronavirus definitely had an impact on our volunteer project, but also on our daily life on site. In the evenings, we couldn't go to bars because of the curfew at 8pm and also the restaurants weren't opened all the time. As a result, we mostly stayed in our accommodation, gathered on the roof terrace and spent nice evenings there. As part of the marine conservation project, we were not able to give presentations to larger groups of people or lead actions with the locals. The diving center was also not open for visitors, so we did not have to help out there. Free time and excursions The additional free time we gained was of course not wasted! On the contrary, we used the advantages we had because of Covid-19 and visited the beaches or sights that were empty of tourists. Otherwise, we also made trips together to the waterfall in Limón or rode along the beach. A highlight of my trip was also a trip to Las Galeras, because I could make my Rescue-Diver-Certificate there. While I was there, I had to make a side trip to Playa Rincón. It is one of the most beautiful beaches in the entire Dominican Republic! Reflection I had a really great time in the Caribbean. Regarding the project, however, I would have hoped for more dives or similar ventures instead of the focus on scientific work in the office. I would also have liked to experience more of the life and people of the Caribbean, but due to the security precautions because of the Coronavirus, this did not happen. Despite all this, I enjoyed my time on the island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and will keep it in good memory.
