The aim of our nonprofit organization is to improve literacy at surrounding schools in our remote, rural Xhosa village where the education system is disintegrating and the resources usually available to other schools are non-existent in this region. There is a shortage of teachers, overcrowded classrooms and illiteracy is prevalent.
To assist the teachers, we place volunteers at these schools to implement our English one-on-one reading programme as well as give extra lessons after school at our education centre. Besides our literacy programme, we have a library, tutor high students and encourage volunteers to run after school workshops in any field which they are skilled in e.g drama club, chess club, book club, maths, sports and crafts.
Volunteers need to be competent in English and older than 18 years. Having a TEFL / teaching background is preferred but by no means essential. We accept both short term and long term volunteers and charge a small fee to cover food and accommodation as we are a charity organization.
Short term volunteers are accommodated in comfortable, authentic Xhosa style rondavels (round house) on our property, two people per rondavel. Minimum stay two weeks and up to six weeks per school term.
Long term volunteers have their own accommodation at our education centre for a maximum of one year at a time where they are able to cater for themselves.
Besides learning about the fascinating Xhosa culture, volunteers will have a life changing experience working with the children in our poor community by giving them an opportunity to change their future.
