Challenging and rewarding experience

I spent three weeks at La Tortuga Feliz in March 2017. If you are looking for an incredibly challenging but nonetheless rewarding experiences you can have then look no further. But be aware that this is not a "tourist" experience. You will work, HARD, but you will also be rewarded with great friends, good food and beautiful surroundings. Plus the knowledge that you are doing something positive for incredibly endangered species. Things are basic on the island. You work long days and patrol at night, sneaking sleep where you can get it. But being up close and personal with leatherback turtles is unlike anything else I've ever experienced. I became close with many of my fellow volunteers. Food is plentiful and super tasty, but know upfront that there is very little fresh fruit or veggies (this was a hard one for me to get used to). I enjoyed the experience so much, I plan to return!

La Tortuga Feliz offers a once in a lifetime experience. I volunteered there for 2 weeks in June/July 2017 and met some amazing people from all different backgrounds. The biologists and research assistants have great knowledge surrounding the ocean, marine life, the local environment and community and share this knowledge in order to educate not only volunteers, but locals as well.
The isolated beach is beautiful and tranquil, and I was able to spend my time patrolling along the beach at night looking for Leatherbacks, as well as working in the hatchery to release baby turtles. Not only that, the local environment is rich with other wildlife, including sloths and caimans. During the day, the research assistants plan activities which varied each day and included clearing litter from the beach and helping with nest excavations. Time off was usually spent reading a book in the hammocks and getting to form unique bonds with the a very interesting group of volunteers, and getting to know their stories.

What a great week I've had at La Tortuga Feliz! Working with the turtles and good people really made my experience wonderful. La Tortuga Feliz does such good work and I'm glad I help as a volunteer. I can recommend this to everyone.

Everything about this trip, from the placement, my host family and the people I met was absolutely awesome. The program staff make it their responsibility to ensure that you feel at home and gain as much as you give. It truly was beneficial to both sides. I would definitely be back and definitely recommend it to everyone ! #PURAVIDA

I recently finished volunteering for 3 months with a non profit organisation protecting sea turtles in Costa Rica and i really want to spread the word. Working with La Tortuga Feliz was definitely one of the most rewarding and life changing experience of my life. The project area is on a unique place at the caribbean with lots of wildlife! My daily activities included beach patrolling and hatchery work. Living conditions were basic as expected, however, the amazing food was a welcome surprise. The rewards not only consisted of the opportunity to bond with a diverse group of people but also to actively participate in an organisation that truly helps both; the marine wildlife and the local community. If anyone is interested in cheap voluntary work in Central America, i couldn't recommend LTF more!
