Healthcare Volunteer Uganda (HVU) is a nonprofit charity based in the rural towns of Kassanda and Mubende, in a mostly agricultural district in Central Region, Uganda. Our programs are aimed at providing support to orphans and other vulnerable children. We focus largely on improving the mental and psychological health of kids who have lost their parents to the AIDS pandemic. Such a traumatic circumstance has affected their social capacities as well as stunted further development of life skills and emotional intelligence. In turn, they exhibit a range of symptoms, from hopelessness to low educational attainment and from low self-esteem to depression.
Hence, we organize grassroots programs to provide simple yet culturally appropriate and direct psychosocial interventions. We aim to produce encouraging results, such as better capacity to cope and more resilience. Our programs also aim to raise awareness of their plight, activating action from international communities through volunteer activities.
