From January 7 to 19, 2024, you'll dive into the intricate topics of sustainability, cultural preservation, and self-determination, all in the context of dealing with settler colonialism and U.S. occupation.

"Malama ‘Aina," a Hawaiian term meaning "caring for and honoring the land," is more than just about keeping things sustainable—it's about deeply valuing our connection to the land. In this hands-on Jan-term field course, you'll head to Honolulu, Hawai‘i, to see firsthand how history, culture, and sustainability come together to empower self-determination and sovereignty. Working alongside teachers and students at Halau Ku Mana, a public charter school founded by Hawaiian sovereignty activists, you'll dive into Malama ‘Aina to understand how it helps indigenous communities face challenges.

By the program's end, you'll gain insight into global challenges such as environmental conservation and cultural preservation, extending beyond Hawaii to other regions worldwide.
