Great Baikal Trail Reviews
Siberia - Building an eco-trail system on the shores of lake Baikal
Submitted by Rudy Weinmann - Switzerland | May 12, 2017
I highly recommend participating in GBT projects! A truly unique way to explore the shore of lake Baikal with its rich fauna and flora and experience Russian culture and hospitality.
It was in summer 2015 that I joined a volunteer project of The Great Baikal Trail (GBT) non-profit organization with headquarters in Irkutsk for the first time. To cut a long story short - it was so great that I participated in 2016 again and I am now looking forward to taking part in a project in August 2017!
The GBT staff are very passionate and professional in what they do and they do a great job organizing several winter and summer projects every year. For volunteers it is a fantastic opportunity to bond with volunteers from Russia and from around the world and moreover - thanks to GBT - you will be camping in magnificent locations for which you wouldn't get a permit otherwise.
On each GBT project you will find an interpreter who speaks English well. He or she is also responsible for the cultural program after work.
If you like an active outdoor life, cooking on open wood fire, building and maintaining hiking trails and playing funny outdoor games with interesting people don't hesitate to participate in any of the GBT summer projects. You won't regret it. If however you cannot imagine spending two weeks without hot shower - you'd better keep away.
