Echo Bonaire is a conservation center in the island of Bonaire, a special municipality of the Netherlands. We focus on conservation management, with particular emphasis on creating a stable population of the Yellow-shouldered Amazon Parrot. We make this possible through the reduction of poaching, restoration of the parrots’ dry-forest habitat, and reduction of habitat degradation caused by non-native animals (such as pigs, donkeys, and goats).
Over the years, we have rehabilitated and released more than 50 Yellow-shouldered Amazon parrots and more than 100 Brown-throated parakeets into the wild. Some of these were injured, while some were kept as pets illegally. We have also built an ‘exclusion area’ to keep invasive animals from our protected land. To support our goal, we have outreach programs like Parrot tours, after-school programs, partnership with local church groups, and education on parrot-human conflict, among others. We carry out monitoring and research to guide our efforts as well as to assess results.
