Peru!

I had an amazing experience traveling in Peru. The program was well organized and I felt like I arrived with a support system already in place. For anyone doing this program, I recommend doing research ahead of time to find places you would like to visit in Cuzco, because you will have a lot of free time and having an idea of what I wanted to explore would have been good for me the first few days.

The Best Experience

During my time in Costa Rica, I took Spanish lessons and helped with Christmas festivals at the community center, Su Espacio. This was one of my greatest experiences! I met the most wonderful people at Su Espacio, and worked closely with the owners, David and Corinna. The center offers language classes, dance and art classes and more. Everyone in Atenas was extremely warm and friendly. Working and learning at Su Espacio was one of my favorite parts of my volunteer experience. My Spanish classes were with David and he was extremely helpful. I highly recommend taking lessons from him if you are looking to improve your Spanish (or Italian) skills! No need to worry about your Spanish speaking skills initially, however, as many volunteers at the community center speak English as well (but it is definitely a great environment to practice your Spanish). I was living in Mexico prior to this opportunity and I found that learning and speaking Spanish in Costa Rica was much easier and enjoyable (the people seemed to be more patient). I highly recommend this program!

Orphanage in Costa Rica

My overal experience in Costa Rica was fantastic. The people were wonderful, and I had a well-rounded schedule. Working at the Orphanage was a very challenging but fun experience for me. I stayed in Atenas and volunteered in Palmares (about 50 minutes away by bus). Although the bus ride was a little lengthy, I enjoyed the time to myself, and the views of the Costa Rican mountain side. The ride is very windy, so if you get car sick easily, this isn't the ride for you. My experience was a little different than I imagined, however. I was instructed to come with daily lesson plans for the children, but I learned to come with several different activities each day because the children didn't hold interest in one thing for very long. It was also hard being the only volunteer with 15 children. It is important to think on your feet and be patient when the kids all want your attention at once. They loved crafts, ball games, jump rope, and music. It was a very rewarding experience, but it definitely took a lot of work!

Ecuador Experience

My AMPED Abroad experience was nothing shy of amazing. The staff organized the perfect experience to Ecuador. I was given the opportunity to intern at a physical therapy clinic and took Spanish classes.
