Dunans Bridge & Castle Conservation

As long ago as 1590, cartographers noted a property on their maps called Dounens or Dunans. Architect Andrew Kerr transformed the Dunans lodge into a mock castle in 1864. Sadly, this unique and dramatic baronial house was largely destroyed by fire in 2001. Even more significant than the “castle” is the A-listed Dunans Bridge providing access to the site, designed and built by Thomas Telford in 1815. Dunans Castle established a program of hands-on training to provide an invaluable building conservation experience. Experts in traditional building teach AiP volunteers preservation skills and guide them in completing much-needed work. Recently, Dunans bought back over 100 hectares of the original estate.
