Traveling the world is one of the best educational experiences an individual can have. After shedding the bonds of daily life, routine, and one's comfort zone, people tend to become alive in a way they usually don't feel is possible at home. Suddenly, you have the urge to explore, understand, and experience everything around you. Curiosity that you haven't had since childhood gives you new eyes for life and opportunities. With social expectations gone, everybody becomes a friend. It's thrilling, confusing, exciting, and helps you better understand your place in a worldwide context.
Traveling itself can be tiresome, complicated, and expensive, though. Which is why we think that one of the best ways to be a citizen of the world is to spend time in one place, getting to know the culture in-depth, and investing a part of yourself in the local community - as our program allows. The opportunity to volunteer as an English Language Assistant with the AICI English Immersion Program is uniquely convenient for English speaking travelers.
In a nutshell, Assistants are asked to donate three hours to four hours of the day for structured speaking lessons, practice, or activities. They are also expected to engage with the community in making meals, joining in games, outings, or activities, and general chit-chat. In return, they receive the tangible benefits of room and board. Then, there are the intangible benefits: the ease of traveling without knowing the language, a safe ready-made community, and a peaceful home on a gorgeous beach.
The rest of the time is yours to explore, sit on the beach, practice Portuguese with the locals, visit nearby islands, learn Capoeira (Brazilian martial art) or Forro and Samba (Brazilian dances), travel to area towns, or much more.
