Academic English Studies (AES) at Lewis & Clark offers intensive English instruction through a rigorous curriculum that accelerates proficiency development. Our content-based curriculum closely approximates undergraduate courses in teaching style, content, and expectations. Students develop strong writing, reading, speaking, and critical thinking skills, expand vocabulary in a wide variety of subjects, ranging from the humanities to science and technology to business and organizational leadership, develop appropriate learning strategies and the cross-cultural awareness necessary for successful completion of their undergraduate or graduate studies, and engage in campus live at Lewis & Clark.
Undergraduate students can receive up to 24-credits from AES coursework to apply toward their degrees at Lewis & Clark. This is a great partnership opportunity for study abroad. Students accepted into graduate programs across the United States prepare with us. Our program allows for short-term academic preparation of six weeks to one semester, or a full year of English and academic preparation.
Our content-based courses provide English development in specialized areas. Short-term programs can be designed for small groups wanting to focus on English for Specific Purposes such as law, business, or engineering. Teachers and teachers-in training benefit from our main program by improving their English knowledge and ability while observing best practices in language teaching and intercultural development.
Individualized, short-term programs can be designed for small groups. Programs can include TESL seminars and workshops on a variety of topics or a specialized area. These can be combined with observations and classroom or school visits.
