Spanish in Costa Rica
Submitted by Laura Foederer - United States | October 19, 2017
I spent 17 weeks in Academia Tica, 17 weeks very '¡pura vida!'. I don’t have enough space to describe everything. I have learned a lot! I couldn’t speak Spanish before coming to Costa Rica but now I feel like I can survive. Costa Rica has my heart. I remember my first day at school, I didn’t understand anything. I remember the first lesson with Gloria and my first words in Spanish. I'm very grateful to her, my lessons were always fun and she's a great teacher, with a lot of experience and a big heart. Adriana is also a very good teacher and a great friend. I had many lessons with her and learned a lot. My third teacher was Oscar, the classes with him were different but I liked them a lot. He always gave me very good advice.
As for my time in Costa Rica, I loved the surf lessons and the trips during the weekends with the other students. I saw many different places. I will never forget the zumba classes with Gloria. I also really enjoyed my adventures like bungee, tarzan swing and canopy. I also loved the time with my host family, I have now two families, one in Switzerland and one in Costa Rica. My favorite place in Jacó is the viewpoint. I spent a lot of time there enjoying good books. I will never forget my time in Costa Rica, I met many new friends and collected many new experiences.
My experience in Academia Tica

More than half a year ago, I was thinking for the first time of learning a new language. I wanted to do it during the vacation period at the university. I was thinking a lot about what could be the perfect place and worried about what the school, students and teachers would look like. I was not sure if eight weeks would be enough to be able to communicate well in this language. Now I know I had nothing to worry about. Academia Tica is an incredible place to make almost all my dreams come true. My time there has been unforgettable. Not only my Spanish has improved considerably but I also climbed the highest volcano in the country, saw animals with an exceptional diversity and swam in the two seas, Pacific and Atlantic (the same day!). I met a lot of new friends during my time there and I hope some of them stay that way after my return to Switzerland. I am grateful to all the people who made my stay so successful, including my Costa Rican families who taught me about the culture.
Spanish at Academia Tica

The classes were very good to improve my Spanish since the communication was very active and interesting. There was always a new topic we wanted to talk about. I think this is the best way to learn about a language and culture. There was also a nice atmosphere between teachers and students, which I think is because the school is not so big so it feels like a family atmosphere. Thank you all!
Experience in Costa Rica and Academia Tica

I was in Costa Rica for seven weeks but spent most of my time in Jacó with Academia Tica. It was an experience I will never forget. I was very lucky to meet new friends from all over the world. I'm also glad to have had the opportunity to travel and to know many places in that beautiful country, such as Manuel Antonio, Monteverde, La Fortuna, Tamarindo, Ostional, Montezuma and of course Jacó. The classes were great and the teachers fantastic. They were always very patient and kind, and also made me laugh all the time. The style of teaching there is the best thing I've ever seen in my life. I think now I speak Spanish with more confidence. The school inspired me and I hope to learn more when I return to England. Thank you for everything!
Learning Spanish in Academia Tica

I spent four weeks in Academia Tica and I'm thankful for the good time. I studied a lot with my Spanish course. Homework was an important part for the purpose of remembering everything learned in class. I really liked the methodology and class schedule. The soccer and ping pong games were a hug motivation but the lessons were also very fun, we used to joke a lot. Something I especially liked was that no other languages are used in class unless it is strictly necessary, that definitely helps to improve faster. Teachers and staff were all very kind. As soon as I have some free time I'm sure I'll go visit again.
