Locations
Colombia’s welcoming climate offers something for everyone. Those who prefer a mildly cold climate will find solace in the capital city of Bogotá, and those who enjoy the sun will find locations that are less crowded and closer to nature. Language learners will find Spanish language programs located throughout the country. The largest number of language programs in Colombia are based the nation’s major cities.
Bogota. Set 8600 feet above sea level, Bogota is one of the highest capital cities in South America. Owing to its altitude, the city enjoys a mild climate year-round in spite of its closeness to the equator. Those who choose language programs in Bogota will find that it is a city of contrasts. Students will find a beautiful balance between modern and colonial architecture, as well as a blend of tree-lined bicycle routes and busy traffic avenues throughout the city. With many universities, cultural institutions, film festivals, and theatres, not to mention the locals’ genuine cultural sophistication, the city has even been dubbed the “Athens of South America.”
Cartagena. Founded by Pedro de Heredia in 1533, Cartagena was the first Spanish colony in the Americas. Due to its strategic location on the bay, the city was the center of economic and political activity during the colonial period and played an important role in the administration and expansion of the Spanish empire. Set within 13 kilometers of centuries-old colonial stone walls, the city’s labyrinthine cobbled alleys and colonial buildings are a window to its past. Cartagena is one of the top tourist destinations in the country, and is therefore quite a safe place for language study in Colombia.
Barranquilla grew as the country’s principal port city during World War I and World War II, and earned the accolade “Colombia’s Golden Gate”. Today, Barranquilla still stands as one of the nation’s largest port cities and as an industrial hub. Declared a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, the Carnival of Barranquilla is the country’s most important cultural and folk festival, and one that should not be missed! Barranquilla is known as much for its festive ambiance as it is for the friendliness and happiness of its people. The Barranquilleros are an optimistic, relaxed, open, hardworking, and goal-directed bunch. With a population of more than 1,400,000, the city offers a big city atmosphere with the intimacy and hospitality of a small town.
Language Programs in Colombia
Known for its beautiful landscapes and friendly population, Colombia offers an idyllic place for Spanish language programs abroad. The country boasts a plethora of inspiring locations for language learning and a Spanish accent that is easy to understand and replicate, making it a haven for beginners. Language programs in Colombia provide students with a wide range of courses that can assure rapid progress and fluency development, through a variety of methods and techniques. Whether you prefer a short or extended course, a city or small town, a language school or a university, you will find just the language program you are looking for in Colombia.
University Language Courses. Many university students choose to take Spanish language courses in Colombia alongside other courses at local universities. This gives language students access to the institution’s resources and amenities and the chance to take classes alongside local Colombian students, thereby escalating their cultural immersion and increasing their opportunities to communicate and build relationships with locals.
Spanish Courses Combined with Specialized Studies. It is also possible to combine Spanish language courses in Colombia with specialized studies that are specific to the region, such as archaeological tourism or Amazon studies. These language programs in Colombia give students the opportunity to put their language skills to the test by engaging in fieldwork and taking their learning outside the classroom.
Customized Spanish Courses. It is possible for students of all Spanish language abilities to find language programs in Colombia to suit their needs and skills. All language schools in Colombia generally offer an array of courses to match any student’s needs and preferences. Some programs even include recreational and cultural activities to help expand students’ learning and experience the local culture. Individuals can also choose to enroll in customized language programs in Colombia that include one-on-one, personalized lessons, with tasks, methods, and content to match each individual’s needs and goals.
Costs & Affordability
The cost of living in Colombia is not as affordable as that of other South American countries, but compared to major U.S. cities, it offers quite a bargain. Factoring in the country’s first-world amenities and growing infrastructure, the cost of living is considerably more affordable than many other top locations for Spanish language study abroad.
One of the most affordable things in Colombia is food. A meal complete with fresh juice and an appetizer may cost under $2 and a beer costs as little as $0.70. Transportation in Colombia is fairly reasonably priced, and is accessible throughout most major cities.
Accommodation & Visas
Language students can choose from a wide range of accommodation options in Colombia, including apartments, guest houses, dormitories, and homestays. The most popular option among language program participants is homestay accommodation, which usually includes meals and always gives students a true experience of Colombian culture.
Three principal types of visas are available for language programs in Colombia. The easiest option is obtaining a tourist visa, which allows foreigners to stay in Colombia for up to 90 days. This visa is a great option for those who are attending private or customized language courses in Colombia, and students will be able to extend their tourist visa for an additional 90 days if desired. Those who plan to enroll in a local Colombian university will have to apply for either a temporary visitor visa or a Colombian student visa. The former is for students taking courses for less than three months, while the latter is for those taking courses for more than three months.
GoAbroad Insider Tips
Geography. One of the major factors that lure visitors to Colombia is its rich and varied landscape. Colombia has it all, from bustling metropolises and whitewashed colonial villages to thick jungles and vast plains to snow-capped mountains and deserts.
Safety. As alluring as Colombia may be, people often think twice about venturing into the country. Colombia’s murky past, wrought with drugs, kidnapping, and violence, has made this beautiful nation a tantalizing yet dubious place for language study abroad. While many of these problems continue to exist today, the quality of life in Colombia has nonetheless improved significantly and it is possible to attend language programs in Colombia safely.
Local People. Colombia’s less than stellar reputation has made attracting visitors to the country quite a challenge, which means locals are immensely appreciative of those who decide to visit and see for themselves what the country has to offer. Language students will find Colombians to be incredibly friendly, warm, and kind. The locals go the extra mile to make visitors feel welcome in their country.
The Language. Colombian Spanish is known for its clear pronunciation and neutral accent, making the country an ideal destination for students who are just starting to dip their toes into Spanish language learning.

Great Experience for Spanish Learning and Community Immersion
July 03, 2026by: Onni Peltola - FinlandProgram: Learn Spanish & Live Like a Local in Colombia - Bucaramanga
I had the pleasure of getting 10 hours of Spanish lessons a week from Diego for all the 5 weeks I spent in Bucaramanga with Bucara Voluntours. My starting level was barely A2 (I think): I could understand and speak in very basic conversations in for example ordering in restaurants and tell some facts about myself. Together with doing volunteering with local people and getting Spanish lessons, I can now understand most conversations I encounter while traveling as long as I can hear the speaker well and they don't speak super fast. And also take care of myself in Spanish in most situations. As well as I can imagine learning in only 5 weeks :) Diego had a really fun and flexible approach to teaching. After the first few days, the lessons felt more like practicing a language with friends than having a teacher tell you things. Still, Diego knew well which things to concentrate on and as my skills improved, I feel like he would also start talking faster and using english less and less. Which was very good for learning to understand what I'm told even if I don't get all the words. Muchísimas gracias Bucara Voluntours y Bucara Spanish Academy por las 5 semanas inolvidables

It’s so much more than that, it’s a week that makes you forget all the stress in your life and just live to enjoy
April 22, 2025by: HProgram: Spanish Immersion Program (SIP)
Words can’t describe how great the experience is. SIP is by far the most fun I’ve had on a weeks holiday where I’m meant to be actively learning something. What Alvaro and the team manage to accomplish, by bringing together a group of strangers and welcoming them as part of their family, gives everybody the confidence they need to break through those barriers of being scared to speak in another language. I feel so grateful to now have spent two weeks in SIP programs and 100% will be coming back for more, I’ve met so many wonderful people and made lifelong friends. The food, the activities, the people, it’s not just an immersion program, it’s so much more than that, it’s a week that makes you forget all the stress in your life and just live to enjoy - the perfect way to experience the Spanish culture.
I had an incredible experience in SIP Sevilla and highly recommend it!

I had an incredible experience in SIP Sevilla and highly recommend it! The trip was meticulously planned with a lot of fun activities. We also had enough down time to explore on our own as well. The experience had a little bit of everything: adventure, cultural exploration, checking out historical sites, a little night life, and lots of incredible food. Álvaro and the team are welcoming and made sure each moment was a memorable experience. La oportunidad practicar español todos los días es importante. Después de la experiencia, me siento más cómodo hablar y estoy emocionada que aprender más!

When I think about my experience participating in the immersion program (SIP) in Sevilla, one word keeps coming to mind- rica. Una experiencia rica- en la cultura, en la comida, lengua, amistades. If you ever have the opportunity to experience an immersion program, you won’t regret a moment with Alvaro and his team!

What an incredible way to experience Seville and grow in a new language! The teacher and staff are fantastic and put you at ease right away. I loved the house, food and cultural experiences. The house was historic, comfortable and ideally located. The food we were served was delicious and local to the region with vegan and vegetarian options. We traveled to nearby towns and beaches that were so enjoyable. I took a cooking class, flamenco class and saw a beautiful flamenco show. If you have the opportunity to participate in a Spanish Immersion Program with The Spanish Link, do it! You’ll be giving the next 5-star review.
Much fun and valuable!
December 30, 2024by: Mara . - GermanyProgram: Spanish Immersion Program (SIP)
This program is so amazing and actually THE way to learn Spanish. I moved to Spain without speaking a word of Spanish and I did not speak much when I joined the program this year in March. I have learned so much and improved both, my speaking and my listening skills immensely. I actually learned how to say things without sounding like a translator and gained so much confidence in using the language. Since the students share everyday life with the native speakers, everything you talk about is somehow interesting and helpful. No boring topics. The activities were so much fun, the people were amazing, the food was not only delicious but also local and that week really took my Spanish to the next level! I'm looking forward to the next SIP and maybe I'll see you there. If there is a spot left, go get it, you won't regret it!
SIP in Seville Is FANTASTIC!
December 30, 2024by: Lucca Gnaulati - United StatesProgram: Spanish Immersion Program (SIP)
First time in Spain and I had a blast! Alvaro put together such a great program, and that was the first one! We had all sorts of fun activities planned on the daily. We got to explore Seville In-depth and try out some pretty cool restaurants. We also ventured outside the city a couple times which was amazing as well. You will see a huge improvement in your Spanish because you are “practicing” most of the day. I can’t recommend this immersion program enough, Alvaro and his team really put together a great program!

Amazing experience that I want to repeat
December 30, 2024by: Ekaterina Bii - RussiaProgram: Spanish Immersion Program (SIP)
This program was a fantastic opportunity to enhance my Spanish skills, taking me from A2/B1 to B1/B2 in just a short period. Beyond language improvement, it also brought me incredible new friendships, a deeper appreciation for Spanish culture, and unforgettable memories. The engaging activities, professional instructors, and supportive environment made learning enjoyable and immersive. Now I’m even more motivated to continue this journey and can’t wait to join this amazing team again, this time in Tenerife!

An excellent adventure in Seville!
December 30, 2024by: Debbie Maciolek - United StatesProgram: Spanish Immersion Program (SIP)
If you are looking for a top-rate Spanish immersion program, I can highly recommend this program, as I have experienced it firsthand. I had the luck of traveling to Seville, Spain and staying in a beautiful Spanish home with this amazing team. The team is extremely friendly and they are by your side the entire week. The dishes served were local cuisine cooked fresh in the home that you reside in for the week.... and they were delicious! All fresh ingredients with a lot of variety. The day trips provided were interesting, educational as far as learning about Spanish culture, and most importantly....fun! There are some small breaks during the days to learn Spanish in an informal manner, but honestly, you are learning Spanish all day, as you are engaged in speaking to the team about every day situations and everyday life. The team also speaks English, so no worries if your Spanish is at a beginner level. I think a Spanish student at any level of Spanish speaking would enjoy the immersion trip and return home with a larger vocabulary, increase in comfort level for speaking Spanish with native speakers, and new friends!

A Perfect Mix of Language, Culture, and Adventure
November 22, 2024by: FelicityProgram: Spanish Immersion Program (SIP)
I joined SIP in Sevilla in 2024, and it was absolutely fantastic. As someone from England who’s been learning Spanish for a while, I wanted to push myself beyond the classroom—and this programme delivered. The classes were engaging, but the real magic happened during the cultural activities. From cooking traditional dishes and taking flamenco lessons to kayaking on the river and exploring beautiful villages, every moment felt meaningful and fun. The house where we stayed was stunning, with a lovely group of people and amazing food prepared daily by the chefs. What I loved most was how natural it felt to practise Spanish—whether during yoga at the house or chatting with locals on day trips, it never felt forced. By the end, I noticed a real improvement in my confidence and speaking skills. If you’re looking for a mix of learning and adventure, SIP is perfect!
It exceeded my expectations.
November 22, 2024by: Wade AdelmanProgram: Spanish Immersion Program (SIP)
I attended SIP in Sevilla in 2023, and it was one of the most enriching experiences I've had. The combination of structured Spanish classes and cultural activities like cooking, flamenco, and exploring local gems made learning the language feel natural and fun. The program created a warm and inclusive atmosphere, with everything—from the cozy accommodations to the delicious meals—carefully thought out. What stood out the most was how seamlessly Spanish was integrated into everyday interactions. Whether kayaking, enjoying yoga at the SIP house, or chatting during excursions, I was constantly practicing without pressure. My Spanish improved significantly, and I left with wonderful memories and new friendships. Highly recommended!
