The local people were all very friendly and always happy to help
by: Sabiha BhaiyatProgram: Dental Internships in Kandy, Sri LankaMy trip to Sri Lanka started with mixed emotions. It began with a nervous, tiring flight on my own but then as soon as I arrived at the airport and was picked up by a member of the Work the World team, I felt very much at ease and a large weight had been lifted off my shoulders as the hardest part was over. He made me feel very welcome and explained everything that would be happening over the next few days. The journey to the house was very scenic and once I arrived I met all the other students who were all lovely. They were very valuable to speak to about their experiences and places to see. The chef cooked delicious meals and some evenings after a tiring day at the Hospital we would play monopoly and card games. My placement at the general hospital was quite different when compared to UK standards, especially with cross-infection! I was shocked at the fact that they reuse gloves after certain procedures. I spent most of my 4 weeks in the main OPD clinic, working alongside another dentist. After gaining a good rapport and demonstrating my competence, I was able to assist with things like giving local anaesthetic, temporary GIC and amalgam fillings, and scale and polishes. All the dentists and nurses were very friendly and most were able to speak English so communication was not a barrier. I spent a day in the orthodontic clinic and gained experience on the different types of malocclusions and how to treat them. I also spent some time observing maxillofacial surgery which was fascinating. In our free afternoons, we sometimes headed into town to experience some of the local culture. A fun part of any journey was riding a Tuk Tuk being in the Hill Country with winding roads was entertaining and feeling a nice breeze in the hot weather was well worth the rides! The local people were all very friendly and always happy to help. The local fruits are tasty and Sri Lankan dishes always stimulated the taste buds! There were plenty of opportunities for sight-seeing in the afternoons—trips to the Elephant Orphanage and beautiful botanical gardens are a must! On weekends we planned trips together to travel further towards the different coastal areas. The beaches in Unawatuna and Trincomalee were like true paradise and I did not want to leave! I also had such an exciting time learning how to surf in Arugam Bay!
I strongly recommend Work the World
by: Emma DrydenProgram: Medical Internships for Students in Kandy, Sri LankaMy university hosted a talk about undertaking an overseas internship, and as soon as it had finished, I started looking at where I wanted to go. I chose Sri Lanka and had most amazing summer. It was a trip I’ll never forget. I am so pleased I came across Work the World. They helped me with every step of the preparation process; from advice on insurance and visas to which clothes to bring. They also totally prepared me for what to expect more generally. They also provided the most amazing accommodation and food you could imagine! I decided to go on the internship on my own, which you might feel too worried to do. But the support from Work the World meant there was no reason to feel nervous or alone. Once I’d arrived in Sri Lanka, there was someone from the Work the World team there waiting to meet me. We travelled to Kandy on the train, which was a amazing experience and a brilliant start to the trip. The train travelled through the Sri Lankan mountains into Kandy, where we saw the most fantastic scenery. This was an opportunity to get to know the other students who had arrived with me. When the time came for our first day at the hospital we all felt nervous. But the Work the World team were with us and they showed us to our wards. They introduced us to our supervisors and teams, which really helped us all settle. It was quite a shock to see the hospital for the first time due to how busy it was and how different it was to the UK. I was on the Oncology ward for my first week. I learnt about chemotherapy and other treatments given to local patients. The ward was busy—the wards in the UK seemed very quiet compared to this! I worked on the labour ward during my second week, which I absolutely loved. I even helped wash and dress babies when they were born. Labor is handled differently in Sri Lanka, and it was fascinating despite being emotional at times. I spent my last two weeks on General Surgery where I joined in on ward rounds and changing patients’ dressings. I spent a morning in theatre, which was the most eye-opening experience I had whilst in the hospital. Making the most of our afternoons and weekends, the girls and I planned where we wanted to visit and went on some exciting trips. During the week, we explored Kandy and the surrounding areas. We visited local markets, celebrated a local festival, walked around The Temple of the Tooth, and watched some traditional Kandyan dancing. At the weekends, we visited the elephant orphanage where we helped wash and feed the elephants, we climbed Adam’s Peak (tough but rewarding), and went to the beautiful beaches of Trincomalee and Unawatuna. I had the most incredible internship in Sri Lanka. I learnt a lot about healthcare in a developing country and I made great friends with whom I’m still in touch. I strongly recommend Work the World to you if you’re thinking of going on an overseas internship.
