Interested in becoming a Divemaster? A scuba internship abroad can be the first step towards gaining the necessary experience and making the right connections to make it happen anywhere in the world. Diving is one of the most popular adventure travel activities out there, and a scuba internship abroad can take your undersea passion all over our great blue globe.
Why Intern Abroad in Scuba
If your dream is to become a diving instructor, then you will need to start with an internship learning the basics of the art. You can do this anywhere in the world where scuba diving is popular, so why not take the adventure abroad? As a Divemaster you will likely be dealing with a very diverse international clientele on a regular basis; a scuba internship abroad will prepare you for the challenge by forcing you to adapt to another country’s culture and customs yourself.
While many countries which are not necessarily known for the quality of their diving will allow you to undertake a scuba internship abroad, most aspiring Divemasters opt to go where the best diving is. This includes primarily the regions of Central America, Southeast Asia, and Oceania, although there are several other world-famous sites around the globe which are certainly worth looking into as well.
In Central America Mexico, Ecuador, and Costa Rica are a few of the top destinations for scuba diving. Interning in this region can provide you the additional opportunity of learning to speak Spanish, which can be a very valuable skill in communicating with your future pupils wherever you ultimately take up a position as Divemaster.
In Southeast Asia Thailand and Indonesia are considered to have some of the best diving in the world as well. Staying in the general area, the Oceanic countries of Australia and Fiji offer a similarly thriving undersea environment for your scuba internship abroad. Diving enthusiasts travel from all over the world to hit these spots, and for good reason.
When choosing a location to intern abroad in scuba diving, another major factor to consider is whether you could see yourself potentially working there someday. You will be implicitly networking throughout the duration of your internship, and job offers are not uncommon!
Scuba Internships Abroad
Scuba internships abroad are directed towards providing you with the necessary skills and training so that you can ultimately become certified as a PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) Divemaster. Often you do not have to have any prior experience diving as a prerequisite to enrolling in one of these programs abroad, as they are willing to teach you the basics as orientation. You do, however, need to be at least 18 years old and in good health to become certified.
Scuba internships generally last from two months to six months depending on your prior experience diving and the intensiveness of your program (you need at least 100 total logged dives to be certified). Many internship abroad programs can also offer you academic credit by combining the experience with education in subjects such as Marine Biology.
Scuba internships abroad emphasize safety above all else and guide you through every step of the diving process in detail. From mapping open water sites to leading dive briefings to learning the business behind the sport, you will become familiarized in all aspects of the field. By the end of your internship you will be fully prepared to earn your certification as Divemaster and take on the open ocean!
