Popular Types of Edinburgh Internships
In the nineteenth century, Edinburgh’s economy was formed through shipbuilding, banking, and brewing. Today, the city’s economy has grown into a strong force with a focus on scientific research and tourism. With the second strongest economy in the United Kingdom, interns will have endless options when finding a placement.
Short term internships and summer internships vs. long-term internships. Both the Old Town and New Town of Edinburgh feature many universities, where interns can study while participating in an internship. Spend a couple months earning academic credit or up to one year interning post-graduation. Many internships in Edinburgh require a bachelor’s degree, but if you’re still studying, no worries! Previous experience in a related field will land you a great placement.
Popular fields of work. The most popular field for internships in Edinburgh focus on business, economics, and finance. The banking industry has carried the city since the beginning, and it has now expanded with global headquarters for the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS). Others will find placements in technology and science, with opportunities to conduct research in any subject, from iPhone apps to 10,000-year-old landscapes. For those interns who want to experience the magic of Edinburgh, consider an internship in tourism. You may find yourself working in a castle or at one of the city’s major festivals.
Paid vs. unpaid internships in Edinburgh. The only downside here is the unpaid nature of most internships. Edinburgh placements, even with the lack of pounds, usually offer incentives, such as meals and accommodation. No matter your money situation, it’s a good idea to keep the old Scottish saying in mind: “mony a mickle maks a muckle!” Look after your pennies and the dollars look after themselves.
Life in Edinburgh
Edinburgh combines a down-to-earth nature with majestic views, mythical legends, and late-night drinking. Whether you want to sip on hot whiskey, search for Nessie, or embrace festival life, interns will never cease to find magic while interning abroad in this stunning city.
Interns can spend their days visiting primeval castles, like the Edinburgh Castle, where they’ll feel like royalty, and their nights in crowded pubs with new friends. Feast on haggis (a savory pudding made with sheep’s heart, liver, and lungs) with a deep-fried Mars Bar for dessert, and then burn off those calories with a climb up an extinct volcano that is now Arthur’s Seat. And no matter what time of year you intern abroad, be sure to check out some of the famous international festivals, like Edinburgh Fringe Festival or Hogmanay.
In between adventures, interns can rest their heads in flats or dorm rooms offered through university programs. Consider budgeting, as the city is quite expensive. If your program does not include accommodation, rent can cost between $800-$1000. If you choose city life, try cooking at home, as a meal out will cost over $15, and a small cappuccino will be about $3.50.
GoAbroad Insider Tips
As in every workplace, interns in Edinburgh should follow a certain protocol to fit in with their new company. Interns should always dress to impress (yes, sometimes this means wearing a kilt), be punctual and polite, and accept the fact that there will many tea breaks filled with laughter.
Once you settle into your internship in Edinburgh and start to befriend locals, you’ll notice immediately that the Scottish accent and slang are truly unique. While you may struggle at first (after all, it hardly sounds like English!), the Scots are welcoming, fun-loving people who will teach you all the tricky lingo you need to know. Keep the heid (stay calm) and approach the language with a sense of humor, because as they say, “failing means you’re playing” (it’s better to be doing badly than not taking part).
If you’re looking for a challenging and legendary internship, Edinburgh will provide an experience that is full of laughter and learning, so look no further than here. Interning abroad in Edinburgh will surprise and delight every traveler, and you’ll undoubtedly fall in love with this mystical land. Get ready to have a pure dead brilliant time interning abroad in Edinburgh.

My time in Scotland was absolutely incredible! So much more than expected while also changing and improving my life and who I am. It allowed me to be in a place and have the opportunity to work with animals in a new and unique setting that I wouldn't be able to find anywhere else. From working with the birds to spending time with the seals and large mammals I fell in love with the SPCA!

I absolutely loved working at Vet for Pets in Falkirk! Everything from work environment, learning opportunities, and hands on experience was phenomenal. Loads of surgery shadowing time, helping to recover post op patients, and watching consults. I would recommend this opportunity to anyone interested in small animal veterinary careers! I would love to come back one day!

Summer 2026
June 24, 2026by: Mia Matheson - United StatesProgram: Observation and Research in Scotland - Adelante Abroad
I had a great time interning with the professors in Dundee, Scotland. They helped us integrate into the culture and navigate our new surroundings while also providing us with useful professional experience. I do feel that the admin of Adelante was a bit unorganized as far as knowing important information and providing context. I also found the meetings leading up to be a bit un informative and I would rather it be a time for us to meet each other than ask personal questions to a large group (many of which weren’t answered anyway). Overall I had a great time with this program, I just wish I had some more clarity in the earlier stages of the trip.

I have absolutely loved my time working at Queen Margaret Univeristy within the psychology department. I got to work with 3 different professors on their research projects, and they gave us lots of flexibility in shaping their research projects . This is an experience unlike anything I have done before, and I got real world research experience that will help me further my academic and professional goals. I have also loved living in the city of Edinburgh, and I don't want to leave!

Once in a lifetime opportunity
June 17, 2025by: Victoria Marandino - United StatesProgram: Observation and Research in Scotland - Adelante Abroad
Going into this program, I was extremely nervous about everything from living situations to transportation. I have never been outside of my home country and I have never traveled by myself. Adelante Abroad made this experience extremely easy and less nerve-wracking. The Adelante staff are extremely nice and friendly. They are happy to answer any questions you have and they will gladly recommend places to visit based on past experiences from students. The housing I was given was perfect. It was just a short distance from a train station, a grocery store, multiple bus stops, a tram stop and multiple restaurants and cafes that were delicious. The housing allowed me to truly be immersed in Scotland's culture. My placement was absolutely phenomenal. The staff were absolutely amazing. They answered all of my questions and were super friendly. They also gave me great recommendations for food and travel to do outside of Edinburgh, which was where I was living. This program was a once in a lifetime opportunity and being able to participate in such a great program is the best thing I have ever done.

Great Way to Practice Your Spanish
September 30, 2024by: Corey G.It was a great experience, however I do think it is geared towards people with little to no work experience and did not meet all my expectations of learning something new in a new work environment. The best part was being able to practice my Spanish with my host family.
Great Internship

Psychology placement
August 08, 2024by: Chantal Hanna - CanadaProgram: Psychology Placements in Scotland with Adelante Abroad
It was really fun, Dr. Knowles was very informative and supportive. Edinburgh is beautiful; however, it rains a lot, so bring a rain jacket. There is so much to do, so take advantage of seeing Scotland by train. There is no need for super fancy clothes; at university, everyone is very casual. The apartment felt safe, and so did the city. Public transportation is excellent, and getting around is easy. Make sure to visit the local markets and try some traditional Scottish food. The university facilities are top-notch, and there are plenty of resources available for research and study. Social life is vibrant, with plenty of cafes, pubs, and cultural events to enjoy. The locals are friendly and welcoming, making it easy to feel at home. Overall, my experience was enriching both academically and personally. I highly recommend it to anyone considering a study or work opportunity in Edinburgh.
The most enriching experience of my life!
July 21, 2024by: Alanis Torres - Puerto RicoProgram: Observation and Research in Scotland - Adelante Abroad
For a person who had never traveled to the other side of the pond, I have to say that it did not disappoint. Scotland was beautiful, its city, its culture and its people. The intership placement was incredible and full of knowledge and learning. I loved the balance that the program has planned for you so that you can get to know your surroundings and meet and share with new people. Although everything is a little expensive there because of the difference in currency, I have to say that I would love to do it all over again. I’m very grateful for the experience.
Wonderful work placement experience
June 28, 2024by: Mia C - CanadaProgram: Summer Veterinary Observation and Research in Scotland
This program was absolutely amazing. The veterinary clinic I was placed in was so welcoming and passionate. Every single day I spent in the clinic was filled with valuable learning experiences. It allowed me to fully immerse myself in the everyday life of a practicing veterinarian. Furthermore, all of the staff were happy to divulge their experiences handling various cases and answering any questions I may have. In addition, they also pointed out places to visit or things to do in Scotland on my days off from work. Their input really helped to make the experience truly memorable as I got to explore some of the less touristy areas. I would highly recommend this program to anyone who is interested in pursuing a degree in veterinary medicine as it offers a brilliant opportunity to observe and learn.
My new favorite place!

Genuinely one of the best experiences of my life! It's amazing to be able to get hands-on experience relevant to my future career, while also being able to travel and explore new places. I've truly enjoyed my time here in Scotland both in the workplace and while traveling. Everything is so beautiful and has a deep history behind it, and it's wonderful getting to know every nook and cranny of this city.
It's been good
June 20, 2024by: Benjamin Schmidlkofer - United StatesProgram: Observation and Research in Scotland - Adelante Abroad
Ive loved the program, they supplied everything they said the would and I have gotten to have an amazing time in Scotland. It feels like the program is a little unorganized at times but that's understandable because it's not an easy task and since they are willing to be patient with me I will be patient with them.

I met some of the most incredible people, that I can call friends for the rest of my life!
May 11, 2024by: Yosajandy Bouslog - United StatesProgram: International Internship Programs with Adelante Abroad
I enjoyed my time in Barcelona very much. I was ecstatic to get there and start. When I first started it wasn't exactly what I was expecting. Nonetheless, I enjoyed every minute of it. I have made some dear friends. I can say I will be back in Barcelona. I would recommend Adelante. Without them, none of this would have been possible. Spain in general is beautiful, but Barcelona has to be my favorite. It has everything. From mountains, oceans, beaches, forests, etc. They have the cold, breezy weather and the hot, humid weather.
Veterinary Research Intern in Scotland
September 19, 2023by: Jessica Konop - United StatesProgram: Summer Veterinary Observation and Research in Scotland
I really enjoyed my time as an intern through Adelante Abroad. I spent six weeks living in Edinburgh, Scotland, where I spent most of my week participating in research on pig behavior. I major in animal science, and I just applied to veterinary school, so this internship was very helpful in preparing me for my future career as well as my vet application. I also had such a fun time in the city, as I had never been to Europe before, and living there for the length that I did was incredibly cool. There was so much history and I feel that I got to see, experience, and learn so much during my time there.
A good time
August 09, 2023by: Nicole S - AustriaProgram: Observation and Research in Scotland - Adelante Abroad
The program and my time at QMU were really positive - working at the psychology lab was really fun and informative and I’m sure having the experience will help me in the future. The housing was really central and the uni as well as all tourist attractions were easy to access via public transport. There were a lot of restaurants close by as well as some bars and pubs for going out and having a nice time. The weather during June was also surprisingly nice and overall there was nothing to complain about.
A realistic research experience
August 08, 2023by: Madhumitha ashwin - IndiaProgram: Psychology Placements in Scotland with Adelante Abroad
A good induction was conducted, provided a lot of clarity to the students as to what to expect in the upcoming weeks. The environment was very student friendly and understanding. My supervisor gave us the opportunity to raise any concerns or things we would like to do instead when it came to tasks. Experience helped develop skills relevant to research, such as communication, statistical analysis, team work, problem solving and also created a familiarity with computer softwares such as E-prime.
