If your career goals are already in razor-sharp focus or if you’re trying to make career moves after graduation, then it might just be time to start browsing international internships!

How to Intern Internationally

Overview

How to get an internship abroad

If you want to know how to get an international internship, it’s actually quite similar to finding a study abroad program. Start by asking yourself two key questions:

  • What are your career goals? Finding internships abroad largely depends on narrowing down your career goals. Once you know what it is that you want to do or which skills you want to improve, you’ll be that much closer to finding the right internship abroad for you.
  • Do you need college credit? - Are you a college student seeking credit towards your degree, or are you a post grad or even mid-career professional? If you don’t require college credit for your international internship, it will actually greatly widen your options, since some university degree programs can be strict about what they accept for credit. If you don’t need college credit, your program options are basically limitless—meaning your dream internship is practically guaranteed. Intern abroad organizations have connections all over the world, so if you’re willing to pay the program fee, you’ll get unrivaled experience to add to your resume or CV.

Locations

Where to find an international internship

If you’re looking for internships overseas rather than in your home city or country, then we can guess you have an affinity for travel. If you have a specific type of internship abroad in mind, it might make the destination obvious. However, if you simply want professional experience in a certain destination in order to perfect your language skills or learn the cultural norms, then you should let that guide your program search.

If you're trying to improve your Spanish skills, then choosing Spain, Mexico, or Peru could be good places to start with. But if you want to immerse yourself in Japanese culture then you're going to have to go to Japan.

International internships exist everywhere in the world! But if you want to know where to start looking, start with where you want to go. It can also be helpful to either look for international internships at your companies of interest, or to ask your program advisor where the best internships in your career field are located. When looking for the best places to intern abroad, it helps to think about your career goals first.

If you want to explore the business world, then places like France, China, and Italy could be a great start. But if you're more interested in wildlife or conservation, then you'll want to consider destinations like Costa Rica, South Africa, or Thailand.

Finances

How to afford an internship

How will you pay for an internship abroad? Interning abroad through a program can be pricey, but worth it. Your internship provider will find you a killer placement in your chosen field, while taking care of details like accommodation and meals. Some even offer post-internship job finding assistance! All of these benefits come at a price, but it pays off (sometimes literally). Plus, it’s not impossible to find a paid internship abroad (although you’ll have to do a bit more digging).

Many students and young professionals opt to fundraise for their international internships, but scholarships and grants for interning abroad also exist!

Frequently Asked Questions

How to find internships abroad

If you’re looking for an internship abroad, a common misconception is that you need to find and apply for specific opportunities, as you would normally do with jobs.

However, there are actually thousands of opportunities to custom-build a guaranteed internship abroad. These opportunities operate similarly to study abroad, but are instead focused specifically on professional growth and experience. Our internships abroad directory is a great place to start your search. This is an excellent resource if you want to search by destination, career field, or timeframe.

Are there paid internships abroad?

Yes, there are definitely paid internships abroad. However, it will be far more common to find unpaid internships. Depending on your field and destination, paid internship opportunities are few and far between and tend to be a lot more competitive.

If you want to intern abroad but can only find unpaid internships, then you’ll need to find the additional value in the experience. Will you be able to network with important professionals in your industry? Will you receive help with writing your resume and cover letter? Will you get a letter of recommendation or two? Early in your career, these types of benefits can change the trajectory of your career.

Are internships abroad useful?

Internships abroad are highly useful! This is true no matter what your academic or career field is, but especially so if you plan to live or work abroad someday, or really want a way to make your resume more competitive. Interning abroad is an excellent way to get work experience while availing all the other benefits offered by studying abroad.

What are some benefits of internships abroad?

There are many benefits of interning abroad—namely, the exceptional personal and professional growth that comes hand-in-hand with the experience. Plus, internships abroad are flexible. You can intern abroad during college, after graduation, or if you’re interested in a career change, and there are thousands of opportunities across dozens of fields.

And not to mention, you’ll have life-changing adventures and make tons of new friends and connections!

What are the best intern abroad programs like?

With thousands of opportunities around the world, how do you find the best of the best when it comes to internships abroad? It’s actually pretty simple—it all comes down to what your goals are and what you want out of an internship abroad!

A few things your internship should absolutely have are pre-departure support, resume writing help, help with your job search post-internship, and alumni networking. And if the entire premise of your internship is a custom placement, you should expect them to deliver on your initial wants and requests.

Seeing Surgery Through a Future Doctor’s Eyes

October 11, 2026by: Faidra Lekka - Greece

Program: Medical Shadowing in Greece

5

Hello, I am Faidra, I am a medical student, I am in the first year of my studies. I study in Malta but I am half Greek- half Latin American. I decided to come to this program to see how hospitals here in Greece work, how surgeries are performed, because I am interested in plastic surgery. I also saw a lot of surgeries. Plastic surgeries like laparoscopic ones with robotic machines. I saw spine surgeries, reconstructive ones, a lot of things, and also clinical experience. We saw how doctors go and see patients, how they talk to them and how they make them feel here. I am very grateful to have been here; it was a very good experience. Athens is also beautiful. Coming here, home again, was a great idea. All the team behind the program are very good people and they can answer all your questions. Thank you.

Learning Dentistry Across Cultures

October 11, 2026by: Ashley Bolliger - Canada

Program: Medical Shadowing in Greece

5

Hello there, my name is Ashley, I am from Ontario, Canada. I recently graduated from my Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology at McMaster University. I decided to join this program with Cerca for dental shadowing to get more familiarized with the procedures and what is done in the dental profession here in Athens. I recently got a broad knowledge in Canada for dental shadowing but I wanted to get more familiarized and get more hands-on here in Europe. So, what I’ve been doing here in the last couple of weeks is shadowing Dr Costas and watched a diverse run of procedures, from tooth extractions to crumpled crown treatments as well as dental fittings, to name a few. Overall, it’s been a really great experience. From the team here with Cerca Abroad as well as the Athens area this is a very good opportunity to gain experience both in the medical field as well as get outside and learn about the cultural history that Athens has to offer. So, everything went smoothly transitioning our travels from Canada to here and I would really recommend this program to anyone who wishes to gain experience in a medical setting.

Seeing the World Differently Through Cape Town

October 08, 2026by: William Verlaque - United States

Program: Conservation Internships in Cape Town

5

I was excited by the opportunity to expand my horizons through an internship abroad and chose Cape Town for its vibrant culture and incredible natural landscapes. From the ocean and mountains to the greenery surrounding the city, the natural beauty was easily one of my favorite parts of the experience. Whether exploring botanical gardens, visiting the coastline, or simply taking in scenery unlike anything back home, Cape Town constantly gave me something new to appreciate. As my first experience traveling abroad, my eight weeks here challenged me in ways I didn’t expect. I left with a greater sense of gratitude, cultural awareness, and a broader perspective on the world. During my internship with a local environmental conservation organization, I researched and wrote about threatened wildlife species and environmental awareness. One of my favorite projects challenged my own assumptions about an animal I had previously been wary of and gave me the chance to learn about its importance within the ecosystem. I also joined colleagues on an overnight conservation trip to a nature reserve, which became one of the highlights of my time in South Africa. My internship also helped me better understand what I value in a future workplace and the kind of environment I hope to work in. Although two months gave me plenty of time to experience Cape Town, I still left feeling like there was more to discover. I’m especially grateful for the warmth and generosity of the VAC team and for the experiences they created throughout my stay.

A Journey Among Birds & Beauty

October 08, 2026by: Rachelle T - United States

Program: Human Rights Internships In Cape Town

5

I chose to come to Cape Town because one of my friends who had been here adored it, and I can see why! Between the beautiful landscapes, rich culture, and everybody I met, it’s hard to leave it behind. The weekly opportunities put together by VAC let me connect with people outside of my internship, but still with the shared experience of learning abroad. I really appreciated the internship placement, weekly activities, Culture Series, and knowing that I could call VAC staff if I needed anything. My internship gave me many opportunities to lead in different areas. I got to lead supporting stations like food prep and the cleaning station, while also leading stations working directly with the birds, like the rehabilitation pens. The organization works to rehabilitate marine birds and educate the public about the birds around them and their own impact on the environment. My role was to help provide the necessary care to the birds so that they could eventually be released. For future interns, most of the skills you learn on the job come with practice. Everybody on the team is rooting for you, so don’t be hard on yourself if you can’t get the hang of something the first few times.

A Meaningful and Memorable Internship Experience in Arusha

October 07, 2026by: Sree Valli Marisetti - India

Program: Hospital Assistants/Allied Health Volunteering in Tanzania

5

My experience with Medi Trip in Arusha, Tanzania, was truly one of the most meaningful and memorable experiences of my personal and professional journey. From the beginning, Pearl was incredibly welcoming and genuinely committed to making my internship experience meaningful. Her warmth, guidance, and encouragement helped me adapt to a new country, culture, and community and made my time in Arusha particularly special. During my internship, I had the opportunity to contribute to nutrition and health education and engage with the local community. The experience gave me a much deeper understanding of how culture, resources, education, and everyday circumstances influence nutrition and health. It also strengthened my interest in public health nutrition and reinforced the importance of culturally appropriate health and nutrition education in improving the well-being of children and families. What made Medi Trip particularly special was that the experience went far beyond an internship. I was able to learn from the community, build meaningful relationships, and grow both personally and professionally. The memories and lessons I gained in Tanzania have stayed with me and continue to influence my work and interests in public health and nutrition. I am especially grateful to Pearl for her kindness and encouragement. She genuinely cares about the interns and the communities Medi Trip works with, and her personal commitment makes the experience truly meaningful. I would wholeheartedly recommend Medi Trip to anyone looking for an international internship where they can contribute, learn, develop professionally, and build a genuine connection with the local community. Thank you, Pearl and Medi Trip, for giving me an experience in Arusha that I will always cherish.

I had a really good experience completing my teacher internship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It was a great opportunity to gain practical teaching experience while working with students from different countries and cultural backgrounds. The team was friendly and supportive, and I received guidance and training throughout my internship. I was able to improve my teaching, communication and classroom management skills, while also becoming more confident working in an international environment. Living in Kuala Lumpur was also one of the highlights of the experience. Malaysia is very multicultural, the food is amazing, and there are many interesting places to explore during weekends and free time.

A Semester That Pushed Me Out of My Comfort Zone

October 06, 2026by: Isabella Lagarde - United States

Program: CEA CAPA Internships in Florence, Italy

5

Studying abroad in Florence gave me the opportunity to experience everyday life in a completely different environment instead of just visiting as a tourist. One of my favorite parts was how much I learned simply by walking around the city, traveling to new places, and experiencing different cultures firsthand. I became much more independent and comfortable figuring things out on my own, especially when it came to traveling and adapting to situations that didn't always go as planned. I also met people I probably would have never crossed paths with otherwise and made so many memories with them. CEA CAPA gave me the opportunity to have a semester that felt completely different from my normal college experience, and I came home feeling more confident, independent, and open to trying new things.

I absolutely adored my time I spent with WorldStrides. I was placed in an amazing family of 9 people and everyone was so welcoming. The classes I took were all in spanish but none were too difficult to complete. The in program trips we took were amazing (Pucón, Zapallar y Horcón, Santiago) but the proximity to other locations really makes Valparaiso worth it. 10/10 would study here again!!!!

Go Elective Placement in Kenya

October 05, 2026by: Rachael Hughes - Ireland

Program: Medical & Pre-med Internships Abroad | Go Elective

5

Go Elective is a great program! From the beginning, I had a lot of support with my visa application, and I was especially grateful that they were able to accommodate me when I had to change my dates. The staff were always friendly, patient, and available whenever I needed help. At the hospital, I really enjoyed joining the ward rounds because you never knew what cases you were going to see that day. Some were things I had studied before, while others were completely new to me. One thing I would tell future students is to be patient, but also be proactive and show that you’re interested. The doctors are busy and obviously have patients to take care of, so you sometimes have to ask questions and take the initiative to learn. I started carrying a small notebook with me to write down interesting cases or things I didn’t understand, then I would look them up later or ask about them the next day. That really helped me get more out of my placement. Overall, I had a great experience and the time went by much faster than I expected. I would definitely recommend Go Elective!

A Life-Changing Experience

October 05, 2026by: Maja Kalinowska - Poland

Program: International Internship Program in Tokyo with IIT

5

My Erasmus+ traineeship in Japan was an experience that changed the way I see both my professional and personal development. During my time at Peace Works, I had the opportunity to work in an international environment, take part in creative projects, and observe how communication and collaboration works. One of the most meaningful aspects of the traineeship was the opportunity to work on photography and social media content. I could use my background in photography while also learning more about content creation, visual communication, and working with a team. Every project gave me the chance to try something new and become more confident in sharing my ideas. Living in Tokyo was an important part of the experience as well. Being surrounded by a completely different culture encouraged me to become more independent and adaptable. I met people from many different backgrounds and learned to communicate with people whose experiences and perspectives were different from my own. I am grateful for the people I met, the opportunities I was given, and the challenges I faced along the way. This traineeship not only gave me professional experience, but also helped me understand myself better and become more confident about the direction I want to take in the future.

Seeing thousands of lanterns glowing at night was such a beautiful experience. The warm light and peaceful atmosphere made the evening feel truly special.Visiting shrines and temples always brought a sense of calm and peace. I loved taking a moment to slow down and simply enjoy the atmosphere.Temples on a sunny day were such a beautiful sight, with the sunlight turning the green leaves into a soft, celadon-like paradise. A scene I could have stayed in for a while!

My experience with Atlantis in Athens, Greece was amazing and gave me an experience I couldn't replace. My work placement was well chosen and an invaluable experience from which I gained a lot. wasn't sure it will work out

October 04, 2026by: Andrea Costa - Portugal

Program: Internships in China with Leading Companies | GAC

4

Honestly, I wasn't sure what to expect before going. I'd never been to Asia, and the idea of working in a Chinese company felt intimidating. But from the moment I landed, the GAC team was there — airport pickup, apartment sorted, everything. My placement was with a consulting firm in Shanghai, and within the first week I was already sitting in on client meetings and helping with research. My manager didn't treat me like "the intern" — she actually trusted me with real work. The office culture took some getting used to (meetings can be long!), but my colleagues were patient and always willing to explain things. I also took Mandarin classes twice a week, which helped more than I expected — by month two I could order lunch on my own. Three months flew by. I came home with actual experience on my CV and a lot more confidence.

Witnessing Medicine Up Close

October 04, 2026by: Allison Blum - United States

Program: Medical Shadowing in Greece

5

Hello, my name is Allison. I am from Scottsdale, Arizona, I am twenty years old, and I am in my third year of undergraduate studies in California. I chose a medical internship because I am interested in pursuing a career in medicine in the future. I really wanted to get a taste of medicine and be involved in that environment. I was offered this opportunity through my school, and it seemed like a great way to go abroad and see a part of the world I had never seen before. Some of the most exciting things I’ve seen specifically in the hospital include patient interaction, which was super cool, as well as some incredible surgeries. My favorite experience was seeing an open-heart surgery, which was one of the craziest things I’ve ever witnessed. The doctors were amazing—they really explained everything. Coordination was smooth. I think, as much as it is well-coordinated, you also have to take initiative to see what you want to see. Athens is beautiful. The people are super nice and helpful if you need anything. The food was amazing—I had so much gyros! I also got to visit some of the islands and learn about the history of the region, which was very enriching.

Program: London Internships with Beyond Academy

5

I have had such an amazing journey with beyond academy. The staff were wonderful and accommodating, my placement program could not have gone better, and overall I had the best two months of my life. If I had to complain it would be about some aspects of my accomodations, which were not through beyond academy. They helped me find a place and booked it for me, but were not the owners of the building and thus were also confused by some of the occurrences that happened there. Beyond academy helped me to resolve those issues and even brought bedding when the accomodations forgot to provide any. This team is very good at what they do.

A First Step Toward Cardiology

Program: Medical Shadowing in Greece

5

Hi, my name is Harika, I am twenty years old and I go to the University of Middlesex in London. So, the reason I chose this internship is because I am looking to become a cardiologist and I just wanted to get some insight and some internal experience of how it would be like to get a taste of the future. The coordination with Intern Abroad/Cerca Abroad was ten out of ten. Everything has worked perfectly for me from my apartment, communication, and assistance, I couldn’t have had any other way.
