Popular Internships in Mumbai
There are two distinct faces of this western Indian city: the skyscrapers and the slums. As the epicenter for finances, fashion, and film, those who are looking to intern in the high rises can get started climbing the corporate ladder. On the other hand, interns looking to work in medical fields or social work field can also find plentiful placements on the ground as well.
The first thing to consider is how much time you have to devote to an internship abroad in India. Internship abroad in Mumbai are available on both a short-term or long-term basis, ranging from a month or so and usually up to a year. If graduation is looming, but you’re still working towards your degree, summer internships are also available and popular among students. Remember some internships are only a part-time gig, while others require a full on 40-hours-a-week commitment.
Mumbai is brimming with social work opportunities due in large part to the unfortunately high number of slums and impoverished citizens. This also makes medicine a popular field to intern in with availabilities spanning from nursing to nutrition to infectious and tropical diseases. However, if you’re looking to take a more corporate path, Mumbai is buzzing with several new startups and large corporations for those interested in business.
The last thing to consider when sorting out the details of your internship abroad in Mumbai is distinguishing between a paid and unpaid internship. In today’s job market, candidates vying for top positions are finding it increasingly competitive. Hands-on experience and acquiring new skills learned through internships often provide rising college graduates with a huge advantage. If the experience alone comes with promises of a future position, then the ramen dinners may be worth it. If not, find one that will pay you in more than experience.
Life in Mumbai for Interns
Mumbai is a land full of contrasts, leaving much to explore for international interns. Interns can explore the beach and the city life, colonial architecture and colorful markets, as well as Hindu temples and hipster hangouts. You will walk down one street and experience the lives of the rich and famous, and then turn down another to have your heart drop at the sight of the more underdeveloped parts of the city.
While the main goal during internships in Mumbai is to gain international, professional experience, there is a lot more to it than a good line on a resume. When you are off the clock, give your mind a break by wandering through colorful vendors in Mumbai’s famous bazaars. Indulge in delicious street food, unwind at the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival, or cool off at Eros Cinema with authentic Bollywood films.
Typically, interns don’t get paid much, if at all, but Mumbai is one of the most affordable destinations in the world for travelers. Most programs will compensate you with accommodation, meals, and transportation—so don’t be afraid to splurge a little! #treatyoself
GoAbroad Insider Tips
Make it a point to live as the locals live. Some interns see their money vanish before their eyes as they spend it on first-world luxuries. Luckily, you don’t need to spend much to eat well. Every intern MUST check out the street food of Mumbai. Visit the food stalls throughout the city’s markets to taste zesty seafood, curries, Indian rotis, freshly squeezed juices, and Indian-style pizzas. Not only will your belly be happy, but so will your wallet!
As with any international travel, interns must be aware of safety while traveling in Mumbai. Although your heart may be in the right place, locals tend to take advantage of foreigners. Take caution with your money and valuables, be aware that scams and theft are common, and try to blend in when possible. Do your research on the local customs, wear conservative, modest clothing, and explore with locals who can teach you how to navigate the city.
Life in Mumbai is colorful and it won’t let you leave without imparting revelations of life that will forever blaze in your memory. No matter what career path you are on, an internship abroad in Mumbai will undoubtedly be an interactive experience!

So much learning
February 24, 2021by: Pamela S - United KingdomChildren and women are being exposed to so many risks, like emotional, psychological, sexual, and physical abuses. While society are doing its best to address these issues, there are still a handful of cases left unheard and unresolved. In my internship, I was tasked to answer hotline calls from abused women and children, interact in their therapy sessions, and even organize parties for the children in the shelter. These kids are so adorable and I could not bear the fact that some people are finding it easy to resent them. At the outset, before we started our internships, we are trained by licensed guidance counselors and psychologists and told us what to and not to do. I learned a lot.
An honor to be chosen as an intern
February 24, 2021by: Leanna U - UgandaIndeed, domestic violence poses serious threats to women and their children. I have witnessed it first hand in my own home, and I regret every second of it. When I was presented with the chance to work with women and children in their care shelters, I was ecstatic. Even told it to my mom and she was very supportive. Internships like these are rare, and being chosen as an intern here is an honor for me. Happy to do it with IGS! :)
Fulfilling
February 24, 2021by: Jordyn T - United StatesAs a policy student, I really am very interested with this internship. When my classmate told me her experience with IGS, I did not hesitate and applied. Good thing, IGS's courses are available the whole year, so I was able to find an internship suitable to my needs and preferences. I got to experience 3 weeks of fulfilling and rewarding internship, and actually make a difference on others' lives.
Sepanx is real
February 16, 2021by: Alixia L - MyanmarSepanx is real! (separation anxiety) I gained so many charming friends in my internship in USA! My workmates are adorable people. As to the job duties, we did leisure travel arrangements, cruises, tours, independent packages, corporate travel-related sales. We also arranged their service - air, car, hotel reservations. I got to try a lot of hotels (for free!) because we "develop incoming leads and turn them into bookings". They also told me that I have potential to become a full-time consultant after the internship period. I am thrilled!
Got new set of mothers and sisters
February 16, 2021by: Tyra F - United StatesI really love traveling. They say that when you do something you love, you won't have to work a day in your life. So this is my first step to being a travel consultant. The firm I was assigned to is very hospitable - was welcomed by an all-female staff, which made me really comfortable. They are like sisters and mothers to me. I got particularly close to Jessica, my partner in our Japan project, and to Ms. Lilia, who is my boss in one of our arrangement/ deal with a rude customer! They are so nice even if some customers are so rude, that's why I really admire them. It was grace under pressure, in the most literal sense!
Knowing the ins and outs of travel consultancy
February 16, 2021by: Pedro Gonzales - MexicoWorking for a travel consultancy firm made me realize how interesting this field is for me. I talked to clients, created itineraries, did research on fares, and communicated with a lot of people. When I said phone calls are main part of my job duties, I ain't lying. But the fact that I learned about the operations (ins and outs) of travel consultancy is very significant to me. Very valuable, since I plan to open a travel consultancy firm in the near future!
Working for an art gallery is my dream!
February 16, 2021by: Jeraldine Ong - ChinaWorking for an art gallery is my dream! And to do it in Paris is way beyond my expectations. Everyday, there are prepared different units of the gallery. And everyday there are some seemingly daunting tasks. But I am glad that my supervisors are mentoring me all throughout the process. I also did some research, printed some captions, worked with the marketing and creatives team. This internship gave me my dream and I would always cherish it. <3 I would like to give my sincerest thanks to the IGS group for this amazing adventure. Your programme opened doors for me to meet a lot of people and travelled different places.
Different gallery set ups everyday
February 16, 2021by: Dana Farhad - IranIGS gave me a position in a medium-sized museum and I loved everything about it. I super like that it's not too big to be filled with so much people, as it trigers my social anxiety. I love also that it isn't too small to not do anything. i was trained in how to communicate with visitors, and was oriented on the history of the majestic pieces of art. Thankj you very much, IGS!

All-female staff in Paris
December 12, 2020by: Katherine Stuart - Hawaii (USA)The Institute for Global Studies confirmed me at one of the top intellectual property law firms in Paris, France. I really enjoyed using a foreign language in the workplace and being a part of an all-female staff. There were moments of high stress, but also high rewards. This is the first big step on my path to becoming a lawyer.
My preferences are very well considered

a blessing in disguise
November 05, 2020by: Jen Thorpe - United Arab EmiratesProgram: Veterinary Science (Wildlife/Animal Care) Internships
This IGS internship is a blessing in disguise. I had a lot of family problems this year; so I decided to have some time alone and so decided to apply for IGS. I have little background on veterinary medicine but I aspire to be a veterinarian soon. We assisted with taking vital statistics of the animals, and fed them, and even bathed some of them. The calming atmosphere is so refreshing and it made me rethink my life perspective. All I can say is I am a lot happier now, and I am now on my first year of Vet Med.
PPC Advertising is cool too
November 05, 2020by: Paul Malfoy - CanadaProgram: Graphic Design (Information Technology) Internships
I have years of Graphic Design experience, but I never really paid much attention to Pay-per-click (PPC) advertising, Search engine optimization (SEO), and Blog writing, which are kinda related to my field. In my internship in Spain, we are opened to these fields and are encouraged to try and see for ourselves our strengths on those areas. I would say that for PPC, I rate myself as 9/10; for SEO, 8/10; and blog, 7.5/10. Not bad. Thanks, IGS, for letting us explore the world of our chosen fields, and those connected thereto.
witty, but kindest persons
November 05, 2020by: Yveth Paulson - CanadaMy co-interns are the sweetest! This competitive field is filled with not just witty, but kindest persons! I wanna say hello to Gilda, Marielle, and Patrick – my co-interns, who are so funny and lovable. We bonded a lot during our beach trips. They even sent me flowers last week because it’s my birthday. Thank you very much to IGS for this life-long friendship!
Made me rediscover my passions :)
November 05, 2020by: Sandro G. - BahrainProgram: Radio Broadcasting (Communication/Media) Internships
Events planning and photography were two of the things I love to do in the world; but because of “matters of consequences”, I was not able to do them most of the time. I neglected these passions I had, because I was too busy on other things. Luckily, my internship in Spain made me fell in love with them again. I know only basic Spanish, so these tasks are the perfect ones assigned to me. Right now, I just bought a new camera to rekindle this fire inside me. Thank you, IGS. You made me rediscover myself.
