Internships in Berlin, Germany

Over the past century this cultural and industrial powerhouse of Central Europe has seen the darkest of nights, been forcibly divided between East and West, and survived to unite once again as a new-age leader of the European Union. And while parts of the Berlin Wall are sentimentally left intact as tribute to its tumultuous past, modern Berlin finds itself comfortably positioned to now positively impact the global future. Through its cutting edge multinational corporations, industrious mindset, and thriving underground counterculture, internships in Berlin lead individuals to discover firsthand the thriving national character behind this impressive success story.

A Guide to Interning Abroad in Berlin

Internships in Berlin

Berlin is home to many of the world’s premier scientific and industrial research institutions, as well as many successful local and international businesses. Engineering, Marketing, Communications, and Medicine are all popular internship placements where interns will find no shortage of professional networking opportunities. Berlin being such a large and multifaceted city, individuals more interested in Technology, Media, and Arts will have plenty of internship options to choose from as well

Internships in Berlin typically can last for up to six months, and summer is the most popular season for temporary employment (although many internships are made available year round). German is the language of business, so it would be ideal for interns in Berlin to be at least conversationally adept. However, there are plenty of internship programs designed for exclusive English speakers, and many programs will combine practical work experience with German language study as well.

The Program That Helped Me Find Confidence in a New City

November 22, 2025by: Garrett Weigel - United StatesProgram: IES Internships - Berlin Summer Internship
10

During my time abroad in Berlin, I interned at Impact Hub Berlin and got to experience what it's like to work in a real international environment. I helped with events, did market research, and worked with with people from all across the world. It taught me a lot about communication and stepping outside of my comfort zone. Outside of my internship, I explored the city constantly. I visited places I had only ever seen in history books and online, including remnants of the Berlin Wall, the East Side Gallery, graves of famous people such as Marlene Dietrich, and many smaller memorials that make the city's history feel very real. Some days were simply walking for hours and discovering new neighborhoods. Other days were all about food: trying Dürüm and Döner from different spots until I found my favorites. What made the experience special was how much I could do and see every week. Berlin is a city where you can learn something new just by getting on public transit and picking a random stop to get off at. Between the internship, the exploring, and the people I met, the experience really shaped my confidence and showed me that I can adapt and feel at home anywhere in the world.
