The Key to a New Beginning

by: Alyssa Galdamez - United StatesProgram: EF Gap Semester: 10-Week Programs in Multiple Destinations

Being part of the first ever Voyager semester in Fall 2023 was an experience I was unprepared for, and the best decision I could’ve ever made. Little did I know that by embarking on this endeavor, I would unlock a part of myself that I didn’t know existed until then. My semester with EF Gap Year taught me self-love, self discovery, and the importance of being uniquely myself. Never did I think it was possible to be able to afford this trip of a lifetime, but I was left with so much satisfaction and so much pride that I had set this goal and I achieved it. This semester taught me that I can do anything I set my mind to and no goal is too big or too impossible. I flew to the other side of the world by myself and saw glowing blue oceans in Thailand that I never thought I’d be able to witness in my lifetime. I learn pieces of languages from each country I spent time in. I connected with people I would’ve never met without this experience and found with locals who had so much passion for their homeland and wanted to share it with me. Was I prepared for this transformation and self growth? No, and only because it was more than I could ever ask for. To anyone who is scared to take such a leap of faith, do it anyway. I haven’t met one person who regretted doing this for themselves, or thought it was a waste of time or money. Dream big, and you will reach the stars.

A Guide to Gap Year in the Czech Republic

Popular locations

Czech Republic is a smaller country, with heaps of city choices to plant your roots for the next year. One thing is for sure, no matter where you go, you’ll always be greeted by the kindest locals and will feel that heart-warming charm, once you step foot onto their soil. If you’re a lover of ancient European architecture, these are the place for you.

Prague. Find Czech Republic gap year programs in fairytale wonderland, Prague! It’s the largest city, home of its capital, and filled with eye-opening beauty that looks like something straight out of a childhood book. Wander through the streets of Old Town and find your new favorite hang out spot or pub. Looking for traditional Bohemian food? Head to Dlouha Street and devour into their famous meatloaf or Czech burger. Along the way, swing by the Lennon Wall, which is in honor of the late Beatle, John Lennon.

Cesky Krumlov. Known as the mini-Prague, Cesky Krumlov, is world renowned for its combination of Baroque and Renaissance architecture. Are you prince or princess who loves to feel royal? Check out the State Castle, home to the late Rozmberk noble family. Inside you will find the Baroque theater. This is where the nobles would host their finest guest for entertainment.

Brno. Due to its lively scene thanks to the local university students, Brno is the place to be if you’re a social butterfly. Located in the south of the country, four hours from Prague, it’s a nice escape from the ‘big’ city capital. Love to discover old underground city tunnels? Brno has some which are popular among tourists. The Labyrinth Under the Cabbage Market is most popular. The tunnels were used for storing food and hiding during the wars.
