A Guide to Degrees Abroad in Israel

For such a small country, Israel makes a big splash in the international education community. Home to several of the most highly touted universities in the world and a major hub of innovation and technology which is a motor to the global economy, Israel only continues to see its prestige and global influence increase year-by-year. Earning your degree abroad in Israel is the opportunity to study in a fascinating country, dynamic region, and richly rewarding academic context. Are you ready for an adventure?

Israel is a relatively young nation, becoming officially recognized by the international community just after World War II and seeing its borders fluctuate many times over the past several decades. Israel is bordered by Lebanon and Syria to the north, Jordan to the east, Egypt to the south, and the Mediterranean Sea to the west. The Palestinian territories of Gaza and the West Bank also lay to the west and east, respectively; a long-running dispute you will learn much more about while pursuing your degree abroad in Israel.

Jerusalem, the capital and largest city, is unsurprisingly one of the top destinations where international students choose to earn their degree abroad in Israel. Considered to be one of the world’s oldest and holiest cities, Jerusalem is a bustling and diverse metropolitan area which is also home to the country’s top university in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem

Tel Aviv, a major global hub of finance, technology, and innovation, is another very popular destination where to pursue a degree abroad in Israel. Tel Aviv is sort of the young, energetic counterpart to Jerusalem’s ancient lineage, and can be a fun and exciting destination where to attend university. Tel Aviv University also sits right after the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in most global academic rankings.

Academics & Degrees

Students travel to earn their degree abroad in Israel in all sorts of academic subjects; if you enroll full time at a local college or university, than you have the luxury of taking your pick from a full course catalogue. Some of the most common fields among international students studying abroad in Israel tend to include Middle Eastern studies, history, international business, technology, and engineering, among many others.

As the only Jewish-majority state in the world, Israel is also a popular destination for Jewish diaspora to enroll in religious and language studies. Most universities in Israel already use Hebrew as the language of education, but there are an abundance of English-taught degree programs throughout the country as well to accommodate for the larger global population at both the undergraduate and graduate level.

There is no centralized application system for international students to Israeli universities, so specific prerequisites will differ depending on where you intend to study. Many universities will require you to take a psychometric entrance exam as part of the application process to earn a degree abroad in Israel, which tests quantitative and qualitative reasoning. If you intend to study in Hebrew, then a language exam may also be administered.

Scholarships & Costs

Earning a degree abroad in Israel will usually hover around costing between $10,000 and $15,000 dollars per year in tuition for both undergraduate and graduate programs, though this cost can fluctuate further depending on where you intend to study. Living expenses on top of tuition are generally more affordable than in the Western world, and there are a wide range of scholarships available to international students too.

Accommodation & Visas

Student dormitories and homestays are both popular options for international students at the outset of their degree abroad in Israel, both offering a unique medium to immerse yourself in the Israeli culture. Many students will also choose to seek out independent housing at some point in their degree program. Because cities like Jerusalem and Tel Aviv can be particularly expensive to rent in, it’s a good idea to find roommates to live with if you go this route.

You will also need to apply for an A2 student visa in order to earn your degree abroad in Israel, a process which will require the endorsement of your host university, among other documentation.
