A Guide to Human Rights Degrees Abroad
Why Earn Your Degree Abroad
Human rights is a universal concept, and so it is only natural to consider bringing your studies into the international context. Earning your degree abroad in human rights is the opportunity to travel to an unfamiliar part of the world, embrace a drastically different way of life, and come to a closer perspective of the underlying qualities which must be protected as a necessary fulfillment of humanity. The prospect of earning a full degree in another country may be daunting, but will pay off big time as you further crystallize upon what it means to be a global citizen.
Locations
By definition, the overarching doctrine of human rights applies equally to every human being on the planet. It is stated in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights that “all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and human rights.” This means that wherever you go in the world to earn your degree abroad in human rights, not only will the study be applicable, but each location will present a unique set of circumstances which will demand attention.
Though within a limited scope, many people intuitively associate the fight for human rights with the developing world. “Developing” countries are generally categorized as such because they remain in the process of building social institutions which promote access to a fundamental quality of life and opportunity among their citizenry. Due to lack of resources, poorer countries ranging all the way from India in the eastern hemisphere to Costa Rica in the west thus often face some of the most dire human rights situations.
Human rights abuses also take root well beyond the developing world, however, as many economically “advanced” countries still systematically oppress opportunity within targeted sectors of their populations. In countries as diverse as Russia, Argentina, and the United States, it is possible to earn your human rights degree abroad at a prestigious university, while also tackling injustices in your backyard.
Academics & Degrees
Within academia, there is continuous debate surrounding what fundamental conditions do and don’t qualify as “human rights.” There is thus a philosophical component to your studies while earning a human rights degree abroad, which may differ between countries depending on national history and cultural practices. Courses are often required within related fields such as anthropology, history, religion, and political science to help outline the parameters of this ongoing argument.
Perhaps more useful for immediate application, there is also a practical element while earning your human rights degree abroad, which is often grounded in fields such as current events, economic models, and statistical research. While it is important to gain a firm grasp on historical and social conditions which manifest in human rights injustices, the tangible study of applied methodology to solving those injustices is every bit as valuable in its own right.
Generally the further you go in your studies, as you move on from an undergraduate degree abroad in human rights to a Master’s or PhD, you will have the opportunity to specialize in a more focused sub-discipline, while also conducting your own fieldwork and research as well. Some popular focuses within the overarching study of human rights include human security, migration, education, and labor.
Benefits & Challenges
Universality. Distinct cultures may differ in their beliefs about justice and injustice, but certain baseline conditions of humanity transcend argument nonetheless. While in continual development, human rights is a cause that the entire world can rally around.
Seeing is Believing. It is easy to study human rights at home in the abstract, but travelling to earn your human rights degree abroad will actually place you out in the field learning through firsthand experience. There is great perspective to be gained from living abroad.
Red Tape. Human rights is a thorny field with a ton of red tape, so as a student abroad you must always be seeking a balance between ideology and practicality. The sooner you learn this lesson out in the larger world, the more effective of a human rights professional you can become.
Earning your human rights degree abroad is just the very first step in a lifelong battle for the cause, but it is a vitally important one nonetheless. This is the opportunity to get out in the world, see new things, and lay the groundwork to make your impact felt!

Studying my bachelor's in Beijing was the best decision

I wasn't sure about leaving Finland for a full degree in China, but GAC made the application process smooth. They helped me choose the right university, prepared my documents, and guided me through the visa process. Now I'm studying International Business at a top university in Beijing. Tuition is affordable, the campus is modern, and my classmates are from all over the world. The support didn't stop after enrollment – GAC checked in to make sure I settled in well. If you're considering a degree in China, go through GAC. They make it easy.

A journey to comfort and warmth
February 07, 2023by: Emmanuel Junior Nweke - NigeriaLike the rising of the sun, slowly brings warmth to a cold day, that's how I can describe my experience at AUB. The people of Lebanon sometimes say they can be rude, but what I found out is the issue of trust, the people are rich in hospitality and once they trust you, they make you feel at home, and give you comfort and warmth. At the end, everyone would miss their time at AUB.

Cultural and academic experience
April 28, 2022by: Nicholas Modlin - United StatesI spent two years living in Rome, learning about the city, and experiencing it (largely with a running group) and loved it immensely! John Cabot University was fantastic in facilitating this experience and offering new opportunities. Through the university, I was introduced to community members who I could explore the area with and live the most interesting parts of Rome. Of course, this is in addition to a well-experienced and professional faculty. I went through the business program at John Cabot and learned everything and more than what I was hoping from a selection of professionals with experience in international law, startups, and large corporations. The university is very well connected and utilizes their resources to create a worthwhile experience.

Don’t think twice, just go for it!
January 26, 2022by: Mary Curran - United StatesI was planning to finish my degree at UCLA when I learned about the Italian Studies program at JCU. After doing some research and contacting alumni, I decided that JCU would be a better fit for my future goals. I am in my second semester and can’t speak highly enough about the program. The faculty and staff have exceeded my expectations and I continue to be impressed at what this university has to offer. If you’re debating on where you should go to finish your degree, search no more. The experience you will have during your time in Rome is unparalleled. You will not only receive an exceptional education, you will have life changing experiences in the Eternal City.
MBA from AUB
March 24, 2018by: Matt - United Arab EmiratesChoosing a business school was a major decision, and my number one goal was to position myself for an international career. I chose to focus on the Middle East & North Africa region because of its rapidly-growing population and demand for skilled talent. The MBA program at AUB's Olayan School of Business was exactly what I hoped for. As a non-business undergrad, I benefited greatly from the classes and workshops. I also had the opportunity to represent AUB at 3 business case competitions in Canada, Hong Kong, and Germany. Most importantly, I can credibly work with companies and business leaders from across MENA. Today, I'm based in Dubai and working at one of the world's top consulting firms. Anyone considering studying in this part of the world should have AUB and OSB at the top of their list.
